Han Solo - are you up for a battle?

No asking. People must accept challenges. You put up your songs first, SK.

That's why I said "stop busting balls irish." You must be so used to busting balls that you have a guilty conscience.

Either that or you saw the post in the three milliseconds it was up before I edited out your name which I'd mistakenly put in there in place of irish's.

Just busting your balls. :)

I accept the challenge from the band I've never heard of.

For the Ben Folds Five-challenged like myself, can you let us know which albums we can find these tracks on?

Despite my surprising (to me) loss to Steely Dan, I'm keeping the same lineup.

Take It Easy
One of These Nights
Life in the Fast Lane
Lyin Eyes
Take It to the Limit
Already Gone
Seven Bridges Road (live)
The Long Run
Heartache Tonight
Hotel California

All tracks on the very best of collection: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/samples/B0000CD5FR/ref=dp_tracks_all_1/002-0377014-8331250?%5Fencoding=UTF8#disc_1

Uh, duh, it's like only their ironic trademark.

Gawd, daddy, you are, like, so embarrassing.

Ben Folds Five
alternative rock group

Formed in 1994 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, this trio's trademark is the unexpected. Though the group shares its name with founder Ben Folds, there are three, not five, members, and unlike most bands whose lead instrument is the guitar, BFF features a piano. The group's first major hit, “Brick” (1997), off Whatever and Ever Amen, deals with the stark subject of a young couple's relationship after they seek an abortion. The band released their sophomore effort, The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner, in 1999. The band members are: Ben Folds (pianist, singer); Robert Sledge (bassist), formerly with the band Toxic Popsicle; and Darren Jessee (drummer).

When the band first came out with "Battle of Who Could Care Less" (which got a ton of airplay before "Brick" no matter what Wikipedia says) I didn't realize there was a person named Ben Folds and thought it was just an odd name: Ben (action verb) Folds Five (of what? Towels? Sheets?).

I enjoyed BFF;s first record but the Lo-Fi Irony got to me by the second and I was pretty much tired of it. I like the few songs where they manage to stave off embarrassment long enough to give an honest effort -- 'Boxing' and the best song on the first record (by a long shot) 'Alice Childress.'

Normally I would abstain from a challenge when I was not familiar with the music from one of the bands. But since I was challenged, I've got to respond.
Keep in mind I'm basing this on songs I've been listening to for 25 years against songs I just heard a 30 second snippet for...

Scarlet should have attacked Thin Lizzy. Higher than the Eagles and a lesser-known catalog than the Five.

It's hard to figure how a non-rock band killed rock n' roll.

sharpie
Apr 08 2006 07:53 PM

"Wrecked" not "killed."

Eagles are generally considered a rock band. Their brand of bland pseudo-country rock is what I'm talking about. A friend of mine quit playing rock music once those guys made it and opened the door for worse to come.

Edgy DC
Apr 08 2006 08:16 PM

The Eagles did not open the door for worse to come. Far better bands did that.

There's plenty to dislike in them. I don't think that charge is fair. Nirvana opened the door for worse to come.

Willets Point
Apr 08 2006 09:17 PM

Nirvana = good
Gajillions of konck-off bands trying to sound like Nirvana = suck

Of course you may have been implying the same thing.

Edgy DC
Apr 08 2006 09:31 PM

Aye.

Frayed Knot
Apr 09 2006 11:24 AM

It's pretty easy to take that kind of reasoning to the Nth degree and use it to condemn a lot of bands:

- Led Zep probably inspired as many lousy bands as anyone. Jimmy & Robert wannabes (complete with mimicked screaching and hair styles) were everywhere. Billy Squire wasn't the only example, merely one of the worst.

- Cream made the 'Power Trio' popular but, of course, very few had the Baker/Clapton/Bruce chops to pull it off

- Ditto the 'Allman Bros Band' and the oodles of southern rock bands trying out their intermitable guitar-based jams. Many imitated, few succeeded.

Edgy DC
Apr 09 2006 12:03 PM

Yup.

At least those examples just allowed annoying successors too broad a market share. Nirvana's successors put the whole industry into the biggest paradigm shift since the Beatles.

For your future playlist, Scarlett, might I suggest Ben Folds Five's live cover of a Dr. Dre classic, "B-tches Ain't Sh-t"?
