sharpie Apr 10 2006 01:59 PM |
Willets, why are you offa the rotation list?
Lenny Harris Apr 11 2006 05:38 PM |
I'll Take Nirvana
Elster88 Apr 17 2006 05:03 PM |
What's the difference between standings and seeds?
Willets Point Apr 17 2006 05:21 PM |
Seeds is part of a band name "Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds" (Damn line break, part II).
Edgy DC Apr 17 2006 05:26 PM |
That's a new look at his band name. Maybe we should be thinking of Nick's band as a bunch of guys who got difficult matchups in the opening round of tournaments.
Johnny Dickshot Apr 18 2006 01:52 PM |
Not only that, but smart money has REM going down so their scheduled attack on Aerosmith will have to wait. But that's OK. I'll have new action up, say, tomorrow.
Johnny Dickshot Apr 19 2006 09:27 AM |
Pretenders will take on Steely Dan

Edgy DC Apr 19 2006 09:31 AM |

sharpie May 02 2006 09:37 AM |
Chuck or Doc: GO.
sharpie May 04 2006 01:09 PM |
Van Halen and Pretenders does close at 10am on Monday (Johnny re-arranged his songs after Doc added his 10th).
Elster88 May 08 2006 04:54 PM |
Since GNR is blocked I will pass. In the next go round, if the Clash (or another band that beats GNR) is in the place immediately in front of them, then I will do a re-challenge. The other two bands that I was considering sponsoring have already been taken.

Nirvana v. Pearl Jam - Closes 10:21 pm Wednesday
Edgy DC May 10 2006 11:24 AM |
So much bandage out there waiting to be had. Fleetwood Mac, Pantera, the Motels, the Ramones, the Go-Gos, the 13th-Floor Elevators, the Yardbirds, Mott the Hoople, the Busboys, the Flying Burrito Brothers, Motley Crue, Pure Prarie League, Fishbone. Echo and the Stinking Bunnymen! And you pass? Great questions are before us!
cooby May 10 2006 11:26 AM |
Elster is a dedicated GNR guy

Would you like to sponsor Echo and the Bunnymen?
HahnSolo May 10 2006 02:15 PM |
My next challenge will be up shortly.
sharpie May 10 2006 02:54 PM |
Hahn has it in for Irish.
Johnny Dickshot May 10 2006 05:50 PM |
Retarded question: Aren't all bands that have yet to win a challenge essentially on the same rung of the ladder, or rather, gathered on the floor trying to take the first step?
Willets Point May 10 2006 06:02 PM |
I don't think the numbers 1-48 or whatever really stand for anything as far as a ranking. The ladder to my understanding just means that the bands ahead of you have beaten you or a band that beat you and the bands behind you lost to you or lost to a band you beat. Of course many of the bands in the ladder have competed against one another at all at this point. It's one of those things that I think will work itself out as the challenge goes on. It's a pretty level ladder at this point.
Edgy DC May 11 2006 10:25 AM Edited 1 time(s), most recently on May 18 2006 09:56 AM |
Point of Order... when filling out a lineup card, can we include more than one version of the same song?
sharpie May 11 2006 10:34 AM |
I don't like the version designation and never use them myself (let people choose if they want the long or the short "Light My Fire" - I say vote on the "Light My FIre" you like best). I suppose, however, that if someone really wanted to use the same song with multiple versions they can do so - at their peril.
Willets Point May 11 2006 10:54 AM |
I'm with sharpie on live versions, they're just the same song to me and I don't care which version people are voting on.
sharpie May 15 2006 11:30 AM |
Soupcan: You're up.
Edgy DC May 15 2006 11:34 AM |
I always included "Breakdown (Live)" because it has this spoken bridge that the original lacks, with Petty spewing words really fast, rationalizing his "it's alright..." indifference. It's really fun because he goes a long time without inhaling.
Willets Point May 15 2006 08:00 PM |
Updated the ladder tonight. Soupcan's next. Probably not wise to challenge Dickshot's and Lundy's bands since the proud papas won't likely be around to answer the challenge for a while.
soupcan May 16 2006 09:25 AM |
Okay I'm gonna work up a challenge today/tonight with one of my existing bands. They deserve higher rankings and dadgum it they're gonna get them!
Edgy DC May 16 2006 10:06 AM |
Next band up will make it a nifty fifty.
sharpie May 16 2006 10:16 AM |
Hey, Talking Heads have had a bunch of matches lately. Try Jimi Hendrix Experience I say. Or the Rolling Stones.
HahnSolo May 16 2006 11:06 AM |
I agree. Both Led Zep and The Police are lower than where I'd expect them to be.
Edgy DC May 16 2006 03:48 PM |
ZEP - LIN!
soupcan May 16 2006 11:06 PM |
I found out the hard way that there is no love for The Police on this board.
sharpie May 16 2006 11:08 PM |
It was a pretty close match as I recall and there were some lesser-known Police songs in there.
cooby May 16 2006 11:11 PM |
I like them, what am I? Chopped liver?
soupcan May 16 2006 11:14 PM |

They lost to friggin' Guns N' Roses for crissakes! Guns N' Roses!
Lebanon Baloney.
Willets Point May 16 2006 11:44 PM |
So you're not even going to try to challenge up with the Police? That's no fair! And no fun!
cooby May 17 2006 06:15 AM |
heh, shoulda seen that one coming
soupcan May 17 2006 08:59 AM |
I agree witchya 100%. Next time my spot comes around I intend to challenge up with The Police.
seawolf17 May 17 2006 09:06 AM |
I'd say they slot in nicely right below REM.
Edgy DC May 17 2006 09:11 AM |
Soup, that next time comes slowly. Play the Police card while you can. I'd sponsor them if'n I could.
soupcan May 17 2006 09:43 AM |
I can do more than one challenge at a time?
Willets Point May 17 2006 09:45 AM |
Yes.
soupcan May 17 2006 09:46 AM |
Great -
sharpie May 17 2006 09:53 AM |
You can also introduce a new band at the same time.
soupcan May 17 2006 09:57 AM |
No thanks. 49 bands is too many already.
HahnSolo May 17 2006 10:12 AM |
Hey, hey, there's the Monkees.
Willets Point May 17 2006 11:48 AM |
I've got a list of bands the length of my arm that I'd like to introduce or see someone else introduce.
Rockin' Doc May 17 2006 08:57 PM |
I have my next sponsoree picked out. I'm just hoping they don't get signed before my next turn comes around.

Edgy DC May 18 2006 10:00 AM |

You gots to be joking. Countless bands out there, and as long as one --- by your count --- is better than the least on our list, justice is being denied. Bring the English Beat NOW!!!! BLC is biased against ska! Sponsor Hum Machine, baby!
Willets Point May 18 2006 03:20 PM |
I've got a ska band on my short list. Sponsoring Hum Machine is too intimidating for me, I'll leave that to TransMonk.

sharpie May 18 2006 04:55 PM |
No, when it's your turn you can challenge with existing bands plus add new ones. Ben Folds Five, however, may only challenge the Steve Miller Band as their "ceiling" is the Eagles.
ScarletKnight41 May 18 2006 05:08 PM |
OK - I'll challenge the Steve Miller Band in a minute.

seawolf17 May 22 2006 10:01 AM |
I'll post tomorrow. I will have three bands in action, including a rematch for AC/DC. Aerosmith will sit and lick their wounds for a bit.
sharpie May 22 2006 04:11 PM |

AC/DC hasn't won a match since their loss to Pink Floyd so they can't ask for a rematch yet.

Olerud Owned this is your team, your time.
sharpie May 30 2006 10:00 AM |
Lenny is up after Olerud Owned. He goes away tomorrow on a school trip for 3 days so either he goes this afternoon (and doesn't vote in any of his challenges) or he goes next week. Either way is ok.
Willets Point May 30 2006 01:10 PM |
How 'bout if Lenny waits until next week so he can vote and doesn't have to rush. We can just stick him the rotation when he comes along.

'Kay. Lundy oughta be warming up in the bullpen.

Willets Point Jun 12 2006 04:13 PM |
Did anyone keep this up to date or do I have a lot of work to do?
sharpie Jun 12 2006 04:21 PM |
No one felt that they could do what you can do, Willets. It would be a desecration.
Edgy DC Jun 12 2006 04:29 PM |
I counted wrong again. And again prematurely congratulated the eventual loser.
Willets Point Jun 12 2006 04:40 PM |
I have the consolation that being the vote counter actually sucks more than being the ladder maintainer.
Edgy DC Jun 12 2006 04:48 PM |
No, I'm just the sucky backup to the Sharpie here. I'm the first-string Gridmaker, though.
Edgy DC Jun 12 2006 05:11 PM |
By the way, I'm suggesting a new headache for youse here, but maybe the standings can include notation as to whether a band's most recent contest was a win (qualifying them for a rematch against a band they've lost to) or a loss.
sharpie Jun 12 2006 05:12 PM |
I think its a good one. I'm not a big fan of rematches.
Johnny Dickshot Jun 12 2006 05:18 PM |
But 'gotta win' in half the cases means 'rematch'.
Edgy DC Jun 12 2006 05:23 PM |
Well, you can either win against a band below the one you want to rematch against (but above yours), or, if you are pinned directly below the band who beatcha, you can win by defending yourself from an attack below.
If I understand him correctly, is Johnny saying that a band that beats an 0-1 band should be ranked ahead of all 0-1 bands?
sharpie Jun 12 2006 05:26 PM |
What I think Johnny means is that anytime you fail to defend your spot, the other band is always seeded right above you. Until they win a higher match, you are stuck until you declare a rematch.
Johnny Dickshot Jun 12 2006 05:32 PM |
Yeah. I didn't know a win meant defending a challenge from below.
sharpie Jun 12 2006 05:37 PM |
No. 'Cause you're blocked by the Velvet Underground. Gotta beat them first.
Johnny Dickshot Jun 12 2006 05:40 PM |
Yeah, that's who I meant.
Johnny Dickshot Jun 12 2006 05:45 PM |
Yeah, that's who I meant.
sharpie Jun 12 2006 05:49 PM |
I agree with that sentiment.
Willets Point Jun 12 2006 05:57 PM |
Would be a lot easier if we didn't have to wait a month or more in-between making challenges and go back to being able to challenge any time once a band is in the ladder (yeah, I have an agenda what do you want to make of it?).
Johnny Dickshot Jun 14 2006 09:30 AM |

MFS62 Jun 14 2006 12:10 PM |
Nope.
sharpie Jun 14 2006 12:18 PM |
No, we want you to do it. You're the one who probably knows which 10 Heart songs are the best ones (I can only think of three but I'd be willing to check out 7 others that you might recommend in a challenge).
Edgy DC Jun 14 2006 12:57 PM |
The Who/Led Zep was a nice matchup. Too bad it wasn't closer. I guess different matchups might have made it so, but, hey, the Who are now a top five band.
sharpie Jun 14 2006 01:24 PM |
Meanwhile Rotblatt seems to be transfixed with the World Cup and not the local race.
Willets Point Jun 15 2006 03:41 PM |
Rottblatt and his "P" bands all challenge up which will take us through the weekend.

Edgy DC Jun 15 2006 03:52 PM |

sharpie Jun 19 2006 12:30 PM |
Mesirish, you're up. Cure can challenge the Pretenders or Steely Dan or ask for a re-match vs. Van Halen. Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds can challenge from #11 on down and we'd like a new band. Thin Lizzie is blocked for now.

Yup. Start a thread titled: "BLC: Byrds vs. Velvet Underground and then list your fightingest ten Byrds tracks in the first post. It strikes me that the Smithereens are a damn good example of an influence hybrid of the Byrds and the Velvets.

Willets Point Jul 08 2006 01:06 PM |

Awesome. I considered the Byrds but felt underqualified to represent their best especially their later counry rock stuff which seems to get a lot of criticial praise but no classic rock radio play.

I'm going to try to exercise restraint with the country rock, but it must be represented. Here we go.
