Willets, why are you offa the rotation list?

Lenny Harris
Apr 11 2006 05:38 PM

I'll Take Nirvana

Elster88
Apr 17 2006 05:03 PM

What's the difference between standings and seeds?

Willets Point
Apr 17 2006 05:21 PM

Seeds is part of a band name "Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds" (Damn line break, part II).

Edgy DC
Apr 17 2006 05:26 PM

That's a new look at his band name. Maybe we should be thinking of Nick's band as a bunch of guys who got difficult matchups in the opening round of tournaments.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds bring a lot of nationalities into our challenge.

Not only that, but smart money has REM going down so their scheduled attack on Aerosmith will have to wait.

But that's OK. I'll have new action up, say, tomorrow.

sharpie
May 04 2006 01:09 PM

Van Halen and Pretenders does close at 10am on Monday (Johnny re-arranged his songs after Doc added his 10th).

You haven't credited Petty with beating Miller and you have the Doors being challenged by the Doors (which may be true in real life but not here).

Elster88
May 08 2006 04:54 PM

Since GNR is blocked I will pass. In the next go round, if the Clash (or another band that beats GNR) is in the place immediately in front of them, then I will do a re-challenge. The other two bands that I was considering sponsoring have already been taken.

So much bandage out there waiting to be had. Fleetwood Mac, Pantera, the Motels, the Ramones, the Go-Gos, the 13th-Floor Elevators, the Yardbirds, Mott the Hoople, the Busboys, the Flying Burrito Brothers, Motley Crue, Pure Prarie League, Fishbone. Echo and the Stinking Bunnymen!

And you pass? Great questions are before us!

Retarded question: Aren't all bands that have yet to win a challenge essentially on the same rung of the ladder, or rather, gathered on the floor trying to take the first step?

ELO isn't any higher than the Beach Boys, are they?

Is suggesting a ladder with only as many rungs have been claimed a stupid, unnecessary thing or not? IOW, putting a line between Steely Dan and the Cure indicating thast all those guys below this line share the same place? Or does the timing of the entry always mean something?

Willets Point
May 10 2006 06:02 PM

I don't think the numbers 1-48 or whatever really stand for anything as far as a ranking. The ladder to my understanding just means that the bands ahead of you have beaten you or a band that beat you and the bands behind you lost to you or lost to a band you beat. Of course many of the bands in the ladder have competed against one another at all at this point. It's one of those things that I think will work itself out as the challenge goes on. It's a pretty level ladder at this point.

Also, this is now a 2-page thread and I'm going to have to pick up the ladder and rotation and move into a new thread or people are not going to be able to find it.

Point of Order... when filling out a lineup card, can we include more than one version of the same song?

"You Gots the Most (Original Version)"
"You Gots the Most (Live in Antwerp)"
"You Gots the Most (1986 DJ Paul Bunyan Mastermix)"

Should we let the voters decide if the sponsor is going to the well too much, or have a rule?

sharpie
May 11 2006 10:34 AM

I don't like the version designation and never use them myself (let people choose if they want the long or the short "Light My Fire" - I say vote on the "Light My FIre" you like best). I suppose, however, that if someone really wanted to use the same song with multiple versions they can do so - at their peril.

Willets Point
May 11 2006 10:54 AM

I'm with sharpie on live versions, they're just the same song to me and I don't care which version people are voting on.

You might have a point if a band records two distinctly different versions of the same song. One band I'm considering sponsoring one day is Public Enemy who had an early hit with "Bring the Noise" and a few years later released another version with metal band Anthrax called "Bring tha Noise". Very different renditions of the same song, so much so that they had to change the spelling of "the."

sharpie
May 15 2006 11:30 AM

Soupcan: You're up.

You can challenge up with both the Police and Led Zep and add a new band.

Edgy DC
May 15 2006 11:34 AM

I always included "Breakdown (Live)" because it has this spoken bridge that the original lacks, with Petty spewing words really fast, rationalizing his "it's alright..." indifference. It's really fun because he goes a long time without inhaling.

Willets Point
May 15 2006 08:00 PM

Updated the ladder tonight. Soupcan's next. Probably not wise to challenge Dickshot's and Lundy's bands since the proud papas won't likely be around to answer the challenge for a while.

soupcan

Let's see Led Zeppelin try to climb that stairway to the Beatles. Or at least Talking Heads.

Lebanon Baloney.

So you're not even going to try to challenge up with the Police? That's no fair! And no fun!

Surely the Police can beat one or more of these bands:
Nirvana
Prince & the Revolution
The Who
Pink Floyd
AC/DC
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
The Kinks
Bob Marley and the Wailers
Aerosmith
Elvis Costello & the Attractions
R.E.M.
Van Halen
The Pretenders
Steely Dan
The Cure

I count nine of these bands that I personally think the Police are better than.

Willets Point
May 17 2006 11:48 AM

I've got a list of bands the length of my arm that I'd like to introduce or see someone else introduce.

Here are some of the bands I'm thinking of introducing, although I won't complain if someone else takes them before me:

Buddy Holly & the Crickets
Cracker
Crosby, Stills & Nash
Fishbone
Pixies
Public Enemy
The Specials
Traffic
Violent Femmes
Yo La Tengo

Here are some bands I don't know enough about to sponsor or just don't like but can imagine someone would want to take them on:

Cream
The Everly Brothers
Flaming Lips
Grateful Dead
Midnight Oil
Ramones
Sly & the Family Stone
The Smiths
Weezer
Wilco
Wings

So if anyone is at a loss for a band to sponsor feel free to crib off this list.

No one felt that they could do what you can do, Willets. It would be a desecration.

Santana defeated Allmans.
Queen held off Nirvana.

Time about to run out on Ramones/GNR.

Who/Zep goes til, I guess, midnight Tuesday/Wednesday since Soupcan didn't put up his list til Saturday.

I have the consolation that being the vote counter actually sucks more than being the ladder maintainer.

Edgy DC

No, I'm just the sucky backup to the Sharpie here. I'm the first-string Gridmaker, though.

Edgy DC
Jun 12 2006 05:11 PM

By the way, I'm suggesting a new headache for youse here, but maybe the standings can include notation as to whether a band's most recent contest was a win (qualifying them for a rematch against a band they've lost to) or a loss.

How do peeps feel about the gotta-win-for-a-rematch rule?

sharpie
Jun 12 2006 05:12 PM

I think its a good one. I'm not a big fan of rematches.

sharpie wrote:

But 'gotta win' in half the cases means 'rematch'.

Edgy DC
Jun 12 2006 05:23 PM

Well, you can either win against a band below the one you want to rematch against (but above yours), or, if you are pinned directly below the band who beatcha, you can win by defending yourself from an attack below.

Sometimes that means waiting too long though. Waiting until your turn comes around, now that the contest has broadened so, may lend enough seriousness to a rematch.

="Johnny Dickshot"]Retarded question: Aren't all bands that have yet to win a challenge essentially on the same rung of the ladder, or rather, gathered on the floor trying to take the first step?

If I understand him correctly, is Johnny saying that a band that beats an 0-1 band should be ranked ahead of all 0-1 bands?

sharpie
Jun 12 2006 05:26 PM

What I think Johnny means is that anytime you fail to defend your spot, the other band is always seeded right above you. Until they win a higher match, you are stuck until you declare a rematch.

Johnny Dickshot
Jun 12 2006 05:32 PM

Yeah. I didn't know a win meant defending a challenge from below.

So in that case Queen's win today means it may re-challenge the Doors, for example?

sharpie
Jun 12 2006 05:37 PM

No. 'Cause you're blocked by the Velvet Underground. Gotta beat them first.

Johnny Dickshot
Jun 12 2006 05:40 PM

Yeah, that's who I meant.

Johnny Dickshot
Jun 12 2006 05:45 PM

Yeah, that's who I meant.

I think perhaps we should encourage bands who challenge and win to continue challenging up the ladder until blocked, even if its just one rung at a time.

Would be a lot easier if we didn't have to wait a month or more in-between making challenges and go back to being able to challenge any time once a band is in the ladder (yeah, I have an agenda what do you want to make of it?).

Too bad I'm late to this party.

I think there's a rock band that could kick the asses of everyone on that list, with possibly three or four exceptions. And while everyone here probably knows who they are and has heard them, nobody has mentioned them (that I've seen). But it would appear too late to throw them into the fray because it would take ages to have them fight their way up the ladder.

Take a look at the list and see if you can guess who they are, whether you would nominate them or not.

Nahh.
That would be too easy. Let's hear from some of the other participants.
Here's a clue: Every one of the groups nominated so far have one thing in common. This group doesn't.

Think outside the box.

I updated the ladder based on this info. If I'm missing anything else let me know.

sharpie
Jun 14 2006 11:00 AM

The common denominators I see of the current groups are:
All of the groups actually existed (weren't cartoons or fictional)
All of them sing in English.
All of them sing (no instrumental-only groups).

As far as climbing the ladder, MFS62, you can enter anywhere you want. The Ramones entered at #14 by challenging the band that was at that time #14. You can put your group up against the Beatles if you want. The only requirement for groups is that they are groups (no solo acts) and that they play instruments (no vocal-only groups).

Willets, I think you got everything.

MFS62
Jun 14 2006 11:13 AM

Sharpie, you missed another common denominator.

This makes me think that the band is right when they say they never got the respect they deserved.

More hints:
They've been around for at least two decades.
They are still recording and (I think) still tour to packed houses.
They have had hit albumns (CDs for you younger folks) and singles.
All the singers play instruments.

C'mon

This isn't a guessing game it's a ladder challenge.

Now go put Chicago against whoever you want.

MFS62
Jun 14 2006 12:00 PM

Sorry.
I've encountered flak about Chicago in discussions about song parodies. I would predict doom for them if I proposed them for a challenge.

OK, its Heart.

So there.
Happy?

Later

Johnny Dickshot
Jun 14 2006 12:03 PM

And whom shall Heart be challenging?

I guess the uniqueness is that they contain sisters? We have bands with sibs already (Van halen), at at least one with a chick singer (Pretenders).

MFS62
Jun 14 2006 12:10 PM

Nope.
As I said, I don't want to challenge anyone. But I do think their body of work is vastly superior to many of the other groups nominated.

And, its not really that they include sisters. The exception as I see it is they have two female lead singers. I originally thought that there were no groups with even one. But after I posted my hint, I realized that the Pretenders were on the list, with one (great) female lead singer.

Anyone want to take up the cudgel for them?

Later

sharpie
Jun 14 2006 12:18 PM

No, we want you to do it. You're the one who probably knows which 10 Heart songs are the best ones (I can only think of three but I'd be willing to check out 7 others that you might recommend in a challenge).

Edgy DC
Jun 14 2006 12:57 PM

The Who/Led Zep was a nice matchup. Too bad it wasn't closer. I guess different matchups might have made it so, but, hey, the Who are now a top five band.

The FM rock stations that I partially grew up on had a holy quadogy (I made that word up) of Beatles/Zep/Stones/Who. There were those four bands and everybody else. They would even have entire weekends on WNEW devoted exclusively to those four catalogs.

But according to our rankings, the Doors and the E Streeters have bum-rushed that stage. And how long can Talking Heads hold out?

As it is, Guns and Roses, for all Elster88's incrdulity that they aren't more respected, are the highest ranking non-Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame act. The highest ranking eligible act (Prince went in without the Revolution, but even if they were to get an additional honor, they likely don't qualify under the 25-year clause yet), is the Wailers, left behind when Marley went in.

I think the highest-ranking eligible band that nonetheless aren't inductees and have no members that are inductees is Van Halen. They'll go in any moment. After them is The Cure, who aren't such a sure thing.

Another interesting tidbit --- both the Ramones and the Clash went in with both of their drummers. AC/DC's induction included both of their singers. Maybe they're trying to sort out the van Halen vocalist issue before they induct them.

sharpie
Jun 14 2006 01:24 PM

Meanwhile Rotblatt seems to be transfixed with the World Cup and not the local race.

How long can Talking Heads hold out? Well, they've vanquished the Wailers, Creedence and the Pretenders who have dared to try to take them down a peg.

Willets Point
