Lenny Harris is in school now and has plans afterward. He'll post over the weekend.

cooby
Apr 07 2006 09:59 AM

That's fine. I was just sitting here trying to remember what I was going to do next, and it was PM you to let you know. So that's taken care of...

sharpie
Apr 07 2006 10:12 AM

Leads to a question: Lenny is up after Cooby. If we are adhering to the Waitocrat position, he won't be able to challenge up with the Who even if they defeat ELO.

His bad luck?

We should avoid challenging those whose turns are immediately after ours?

He can challenge later given the circumstances?

I don't have the answer.

cooby
Apr 07 2006 10:19 AM

lol, well if this presents a problem, I could change. It was a purely arbitrary choice, I chose a number in my head, and it was the Who

cooby
Apr 07 2006 10:28 AM

I just remembered though, seawolf is next; we switched because he had other obligations today

sharpie
Apr 07 2006 10:34 AM

Not suggesting you switch, really. Yes, Seawolf is next but by the time this one is over then Lenny's turn would pass. Unless he waits til this one is over to do anything. Of course, if he loses then the Who is blocked anyway, anyhow, anywhere.

Not to jinx anything in advance, but I have the feeling that the W-H-O vs. E-L-O will result in a T-K-O

If you call losing 62-38 and losing on 7 of 10 ballots without Lenny voting "hanging in" then I guess they hung in.

Yes, some of us do.

Some of us like real rock and roll music... music about youthful rebellion, and passion and pain and sex, played with a mad power drummer, wailing guitar, thumping bass and screaming vocals.

And some people are girls who like sweet, silly crap like ELO, which is to Rock as dancing is to architecture.

Stolen analogy without attribution, ten yards.

The funnest part of this is sponsoring a non-"fave." Curisosities, where you have little emotional stake.

Hearing the term "real rock and roll music" is funny.

Vic Sage
Apr 10 2006 12:13 PM

i have no idea where the quote comes from, so i couldn't attribute it. Its just something i know from the popular culture.

as for non-"faves"... without emotional investment, its a waste of my time.

whats so funny about that term? Do you find it "quaint"?

Edgy DC
Apr 10 2006 12:29 PM

Well, yeah, I guess. I mean what threatens "real rock and roll music"? Some who might use that term would say bombastic chest-thumping over-arranged theatrical arena-rawk. But you're a Meat Loaf fan, so you don't mean that. Nor do you mean, I guess, over-long quasi-intellectual art rock, some of which you've also expressed a fondness for.

Take the Steve Miller Band off of Soupcan. It'll be great.

Oh and "Writing about music is like dancing about architecture - it's a really stupid thing to want to do."
--Elvis Costello, in an interview by Timothy White entitled "A Man out of Time Beats the Clock." Musician magazine No. 60 (October 1983), p. 52"

This is usually thought to be the earliest source, but the internet will show attributions to Frank Zappa and Laurie Anderson (and Anonymous), but that may --- like the rants that get attributed to George Carlin even though they evidence a politically conservative bent --- just get credited to those two because it seems, with its absurdist truism,- like the kind of thing one of them would say.

The nastiness of the insult (said presumably to somebody who writes about music for a living), on the other hand, sure seems like Elvis.

Hey, sponsor Elvis Costello and the Attractions.

I didn't say rock n roll was threatened by anything. I used it as term to contrast the Who with ELO, which i consider "pop", and to distinguish it from the "show tunes" that Cooby sweetly derided me for liking.

if i were to define it in more absolute terms, i would think its defining characteristics would be the fusion of country and R&B, mixing "black" and "white", and creating a voice for the youth culture that created Rock n Roll in the 50s. That tradition influenced the Brits who reinvented it in the 60s in the British Invasion, then taken by the blues-based guitar-heavy metal bands of the 70s, then stripped down and re-introduced by the punk/new wave bands of the late 70s-80s... but I lost the thread after that.

I'm sure Rock n Roll is still around... i just don't listen to enough music of the last 20 years to know. REM and U2 certainly come to mind. Nirvana, i guess.

that i also like Progressive Rock (or "Art Rock", as you'd have it), much less showtunes, pop, classical and jazz, doesn't preclude me from being able to recognize and like "real rock and roll music"

on edit: Thanks for those references. As a long-time fan of Zappa and Anderson, i probably got it from one of them. While i like Elvis C. alot, i don't know his output well enough to make a good top 10.

maybe Zappa?

cooby
Apr 10 2006 12:44 PM

I only sweetly derided you for liking them, because you sweetly derided me for likiing ELO.

I like showtunes too.

Sorry cooby...

Edgy DC
Apr 10 2006 09:41 PM

Sorry. I didn't mean so much to confront. "Some of us like real rock and roll music" just reminds me of something from a movie.

By the way, while that quote is fun, I disagree with Elvis (or whoever he might have been stealing from in 1982). Writing about music is attempt to find clarity to a form that is often abstract (pretty much totally abstract when music has no lyrics) --- to draw concrete truths from abstract notions. Dancing about architecture would be trying to use a more abstract art form to interpret a less abstract one; it would be going in the other direction.

Many many people have made a living illuminating readers with their writing on music (and on dancing and architecture, for that matter). The objectionable thing has about writing on music is that it's an art form that depends on another art form, and young bite-the-hand-that-feeds-me Elvis probably resented its predatory demands. These days, he's done plenty of writing on music himself.

An Elvis quote that I think more applies to this discussion I don't have a copy of. Something along the lines of:

"Rock 'n' roll was originally about sex. Not necessarily the music literally, but implicitly, because the term was originally a euphemism for sex. And so it was awkward, funny, beautiful, romantic, heartbreaking, and delerious and all the things that sex was.

"What's a rock? A rock is a big dumb stupid blunt thing. It just sits there. Occasionally someone can pick it up and hurl it at someone else and maybe hurt them, but that's about it. That's what happened when rock 'n' roll became rock."
I'm heavily paraphrasing from memory there. But I think the definition is useful in framing what we mean by real rock 'n' roll. The term jazz was also born out of a suphemism for sex, but stopped embodying that when it became first sophisticated, and then monolythic.
