Hey, Nineteen: Todd Frazier

I'm hurt. I was hurt last year. They've already recruited a replacement for me, and he's hurt too. Plus, there's a strawberry on the side of my head. I'm Todd Frazier.

It's like the old Steven Wright joke. It's not that I've lost my job. I know where it is. But when I get there, there's another guy doing it.

There's a lot of history of big name dudes brought in from outside the organization, being a disappointment in year one, and then taking off in year two: Carlos Beltran, Jay Bruce, Jeromy Burnitz, and, um ... Carlos Beltran. But there's a lot of cases where the second-year bounceback was nothing but an unfulfilled wish: Mo Vaughn, Roberto Alomar, Michael Cuddyer, Jason Bay, and ... a whole bunch of other dudes.

So, yeah, the second group is larger. But that's a script I've got to flip, even as the Mets have OD'd on players who play my positions, while I'm in the tub looking after my oblique. I've got to find a role to re-assert myself: third base, first base, DH, pinch-hitter, a little outfield, assistant traveling secretary. I dunno.

But I'm still here. I'm on the payroll, I'm on the roster, and I've got a uniform. So there still seems to be a season ahead of me. What's it gonna look like?

Unless he manages to be healthier than a lot of other guys, (and he might) I don't see him playing much. Wouldn't be surprised if he's traded or released by June or July.

I like Frazier and was disappointed that last year felt like something of a flop, even though he was eighth on the team in WAR. I could see him going gangbusters, but at the same time, if this team struggles at all, he'll be in another uniform by the summer.

I [CROSSOUT]like [/CROSSOUT]hate Frazier and was [CROSSOUT]disappointed[/CROSSOUT] =#BF0000]not at all surprised that last year [CROSSOUT]felt like[/CROSSOUT] was [CROSSOUT]something of[/CROSSOUT] a flop, even though he was eighth on the shitty team in WAR, yet hit 3rd or 4th most nights. I could see him going gangbusters in the Atlantic League, but at the same time, if this team struggles at all, and even if it doesn't he'll hopefully be in another uniform by the summer.

I think Todd fills the role of older local guy known for being a good guy and wise vet in the clubhouse. Sure does seem like he needs to transition to more of a role player. But he's got pop in his bat and I think they'll give him a chance to see if last year was just an off year. But I think they'll be a short leash and not a lot of tolerance for frequent trips to the Injured List.

One of the ways I've evolved as a fan over the years is taking a greater interest in the aesthetics of motion, trying to appreciate the way an athlete moves.

Todd Frazier to me has a very unpleasing swing. I don't like watching him.

Agreed with both of JCL's posts in this thread.

Boy did that salt and pepper thing die fast.

Frazier, assuming he's mostly healthy, will be better but not overwhelmingly so. I could see .240/.310/.440 with 10 homers in 200 ABs before being moved in July -- somebody else will need a glove-first third baseman more than we will.

The salt and pepper thing would have had more staying power if the team did.

I think the number of games he starts will be inversely proportional to the success of the Mets.

I hope we'll just see him as a pinch hitter and late inning defender.
