Nolan Arenado agrees to eight-year, $260 million contract to stay with Rockies

The good news is that we won't be gnashing our teeth next year because the Mets aren't pursuing Nolen Arenado.

The Rockies and Arenado have agreed to an eight-year, $260 million contract with an opt-out in three years, a person with direct knowledge told USA TODAY Sports. He was unauthorized to speak publicly because the Rockies have yet to announce the deal.

Arenado, 27, just 16 months older than Bryce Harper, will receive the highest annual salary of $32.5 million, breaking Miguel Cabrera's record of $31 million per year for a position player.

Somewhere out there, Keith Hernandez is wishing he was born 40 years later.

Somewhere out there, Bryce Harper is telling his agent to send counter offers to all his suiters.

I like Arenado, but I guy who plays as hard as he does is going to get hurt. And like most, his stats are a bit Coors-inflated; he wouldn't be worth 8/$260 at sea level.

His career 121 OPS+ is the same as Machado's. I'm surprised he got a higher AAV than Machado did, but eight years is right. I like to see a team commit like that to their best player. (I can think of at least one more team I'd like to see do that.)

And to all those MFY fans who were saying they didn't care to bid high on Machado because they knew they were going to sign Arenado*.
