Rankings Project - 2018

Yeah, I know, we should have done this four months ago. But it got put off for one reason or another and I kept forgetting ... although it's not like any of you folks bailed me out on it either.

But now it's time to take one last fleeting glimpse of the year that just was, and the good thing is that this one won't get dragged out.

With Opening Day two weeks from Thursday I'm declaring an end to this project on that Wednesday night, so if you want to contribute you'll have to do it soon.

You know the drill: 30 players ranked from highest to lowest for their positive (or lack thereof) contributions to the 2018 NYM season from the (bigger than usual) cast of characters listed below:

Hitters (in order of PA)

Michael Conforto - Amed Rosario - Brandon Nimmo - Todd Frazier - Wilmer Flores

Asdrubal Cabrera - Jay Bruce - Jose Bautista - Kevin Plawecki - Jose Reyes

Jeff McNeil - Devin Mesoraco - Austin Jackson - Adrian Gonzalez - Yoenis Cespedes

Dom Smith - Tomas Nido - Luis Guillorme - Juan Lagares - Jose Lobaton

Jack Reinheimer - Phillip Evans - Matt den Dekker - Travis d'Arnaud - Ty Kelly

Kevin Kaczmarski - David Wright

Pitchers (by IP)

Jacob deGrom - Zack Wheeler - Noah Syndergaard - Steven Matz - Seth Lugo

Jason Vargas - Robert Gsellman - Corey Oswalt - Paul Sewald - Jerry Blevins

Jeurys Familia - Jacob Rhame - Tylor Bashlor - Drew Smith - Tim Peterson

Matt Harvey - Anthony Swarzak - AJ Ramos - Hansel Robles - Drew Gagnon

Chris Beck - Daniel Zamora - PJ Conlon - Chris Flexen - Bobby Wahl

Gerson Bautista - Buddy Baumann - Eric Hanhold - Scott Copeland

26. Oswalt

27. Jackson

28. Peterson

29. Rhame

30. Wright

as well as:

Gonzalez

Do.Smith

Reyes

*(despite the number of ABs they had, i could not in good conscience list Reyes, Gonzalez, or Do.Smith, because they all hurt the time more and more with every appearance. they would have helped the Mets more by not playing at all. I did more for the team by not playing than they did by playing).

guillorme

Nido

Harvey

Swarzak

Robles

Ramos

Sewald

Re: Rankings Project - 2018

One thing that strikes you when you go down this list is how consistently terrible the ERAs were for almost every reliever. It's not likely any of the million guys who pitched for us last year will be invited to perform in such a land of opportunity again, and every one of them shit on the chance they had. Drew Smith and Bashlor were okay sometimes; and Peterson for a short while, but yikes. And of course even the guys who "didn't suck" sucked like Robles, Blevins and Ramos.

I wanna blame Eiland or the bullpen coach or someone. The bad offense also, but it was like there was disease in the bullpen.

Totally. I was scanning the B-R page trying to find *something* to differentiate these guys, but every one of them pitched 15-20 innings with a 6.50 ERA. Crikey.

he deserves it dammit.

But if you think it's against the spirit you can move him to the other side of the list. his presence on it is non-negotiable.

Re: Rankings Project - 2018

30 - deGROM -- Any questions?

29 - NIMMO -- only McNeil (with a much smaller sample size) had more RC/27 and only Cespedes (again SSS) better IsoP

28 - WHEELER -- 4 more starts, 28 more IP, better WHIP than Syndergaard

27 - SNYDERGAARD

26 - CONFORTO

25 - McNEIL -- half the number of PA/AB as compared to the regulars, but usually superior everywhere else

24 - LUGO -- best ERA on the team

23 - FAMILIA

22 - FLORES -- gets some love for his freakish game-on-the-line clutchiness

21 - CABRERA -- actually tied for 2nd in team HR

20 - ROSARIO

19 - FRAZIER

18 - MATZ

17 - GSELLMAN

16 - BRUCE

15 - PLAWECKI -- 22 of his 50 hits were for XBs

14 - CESPEDES

13 - MESORACO

12 - VARGAS

11 - BAUTISTA

10 - BLEVINS

9 - DR SMITH -- Danger Will Robinson

8 - OSWALT -- going on pure numbers alone cuz I already have no memory of this guy

7 - BASHLOR

6 - REYES

5 - SEAWALD

4 - JACKSON

3 - SWARZAK

2 - GONZALEZ

1 - WRIGHT -- Yeah, sure, why not.

Remember: One week remains for any additional contributions, additions, edits, arguments, or just plain mocking of other votes.

Actually the mocking never ends, but all voting will close next Wednesday night precisely at the stroke of wheneverIgetaroundtoit.

Re: Rankings Project - 2018

It gets a little hodgepodgey midway through, which is probably an improvement on 2017, where after the first four or five it didn't seem to matter.
