I say RIDICULOUS!!!!!!!!!!!

STOP MESSIN' WITH MY GAME!!!!!!!!!!

My brother says he thinks it was a good call. Oy!

View the clip and then read the rule (below the clip). Or read the rule and then view the clip. OR........

Read the rule, view the clip, and then read the rule again. Do one of those things. Or all of 'em.

8.2d.1 To penalize the batter with a strike and not award first base if, in the judgement of the umpire, the batter makes an intentional

movement to be hit by a pitch, regardless of where the pitch is located.

Rationale

To provide guidance in enforcing the hit by pitch rule and to deter batters from attempting to be hit by the pitch. “Freezing” by

a batter is not considered making an intentional movement. A batter who freezes inside the batter's box and who is hit by a

pitch shall be awarded first base.

Re: What say you???

I dont like the wording of the rule but given how it is written the ump isn't wrong, you can definitely make the argument that he turned his ass into the pitch intentionally.

Re: What say you???

Was this the third strike? Otherwise I don't understand why he was called out.

(Just checked the onscreen count 2-2 so yes, called third strike)

My other thoughts would be does this guy have a habit of crowding the plate? He doesn't seem to be here. If so the ump might just be asserting a bit of authority

Never saw anything like this before

Then the poor ump drops his face mask when he's walking away

Yeah, that's the worst. Assert your authority and then fumble it a few moments later.

Was Angel Hernandez umpiring a college game?

Re: What say you???

I never realized that the pitch could be called a strike if you intentionally get in the way.

So I guess under the letter of the law, the ump, if he felt it was an intentional move to get in the way of the ball, could call it a strike.

But if you're going to call that a strike on that pitch, you have to have the move be blatantly intentional. At least in my opinion.

The little ass shimmy...I don't know if that's blatant enough to call him out.

Isn't there a middle ground where you can call it a ball but not award him the base? The "he didn't make an attempt to get out of the way" call? I think that was called on Nimmo last year.

Re: What say you???

The pitch was going through the batters box. All he did was turn so it hit butt meat instead of possibly breaking his hip. He didn't move to get in the way of the pitch. At least that's how I see it.

Did he have the time to do anything else?

It's the rule itself, how it's worded. I can't get on the umps case because he interprets the rule as he sees fit.

My book=ridiculous rule.
