So as usual I'm like a 5 years behind what cool people are doing but we finally started listening in on podcasts but... there's a lot of crap out there.

So we liked SERIAL (seasons 1 and 3 more than 2) and S-TOWN (great) but the writing/editing/production of those shows is so much better than a dozen more podcasts we tried that we can barely pay attention to, listen to half an episode and throw it away. I'm trying to listen to one on the Zodiac Killer now and it's okay but not nearly as good as the TAL ones, which I assume is the Gold standard. I get recos on the Stitcher app but their AI isn't up far enough up my ass yet to be relevant.

So what we're looking for is a multi-part journalistic or documentary style cast that Wifey Bucket and I can both listen to. I will separately listen to well-done stuff on Dad Rock, and maybe baseball and other pop-culture stuff. What I don't want is the kinds of podcasts that are two guys on cellphones doing unrehearsed riffing unless they're really really good at it.

What podcasts have you enjoyed? How do you find the good ones?

Re: Podcast

I was looking for another thread and found this one by accident. I'm terrible keeping up with podcasts, but my favorite of the last couple years was Cocaine & Rhinestones. It's a superbly researched history of major moments and characters in country music, so journalistic in that sense. It wasn't my girlfriend's topic of choice necessarily, but she dug it as much as I did.

Episode 3, the Murder Ballad of Spade Cooley is especially terrifying.

Thanks!

We've since found the pretty-good true crime one LIVE AND DIE IN LA which is still going on or may just have finished. I still don't know who dunnit yet!

will check out coke & rhinestones

My gf loves the true crime stuff. I'll send tip her off to that one.

Re: Podcast

I enjoy "Your Favorite Band Sucks," which skewers pretty much every famous band out there. The guys are goofballs, but it's funny.

I also enjoy the Ken Jennings/John Roderick "Omnibus" podcasts. Good general-knowledge interesting stuff.

Re: Podcast

I like

"Flash Forward" Rose Eveleth invents some future, most recently one about being able to tattoo sensors to your skin, to detect things like glucose levels, and then talks to experts and stuff about how it'd actually happen.

GastroPod: Great food podcast, through the lens of science and history. Bagels, Indian Mangoes, etc. Very interesting stuff.

Effectively Wild is good. Baseball/nerd podcast.

These next three are somewhat 'riffing' though quality is good. The second two are generally interview oriented so targeted riffing.

Ominbus is decent, Ken Jennings and Jon Roderick discuss, often off-topic, esoteric topics like 'disco demolition night'

"why Mommy Drinks" Which is (obviously) female oriented but relateably about the craziness that is raising kids.

"Steal This Beer" Which is a beer culture discussion, they have a beer guest, discuss stuff, and taste two beers blind out of black glasses.

There's "You Did What Now" Which is absolutely two (well, one guy (me) and a gal) people riffing on cellphones to bad quality, but I'm including it cause 'clicks' or whatever. We just started. Working on it. It's about science and tech and sort of the concerns around some of this crazy futuristic stuff.

I've floated the idea to my fellow BarleyProse writers of a "What the Mets made me drink" podcast where we sorta nominally discuss what the Mets are up to, and what beers we're drinking, but they haven't taken the bait yet.

One of the YFBS guys (Tyler) is the guy behind Cocaine & Rhinestones. I thought I would love YBFS, but the two show styles couldn't be more different. I guess the snark factor wore thin on me quickly.

I was able to listen to more podcasts when I was driving 71 miles each way to Lansing. But now, with a much more reasonable commute, it's more challenging.

I love The West Wing Weekly and always listen to that, even if it takes a couple days to get it in.

There's a good music one called "My Favorite Album with Jeremy Dylan" where a guest -- usually a musician -- talks about his or her favorite album and why it's special to them. I usually learn a lot about the album, but also the guest. It's a good listen.

I'd be up to Skyping in on occasion. Enough brews in my Untapped log that have gotten me through some stretches of Met baseball ;)

They're supposed to send me a microphone so I can record podcasts for work even though I have no time to do them.

But, I get a mic out of it, so I'll talk about the Mets and beer anytime if you think someone wants to hear it

Re: Podcast

I'm definitely seriously considering the idea. Although I'm already swamped and overwhelmed in life and adding another podcast to edit and post probably doesn't help, but i'm considering!

I've been using a Rock Band mic plugged into my phone to record, which seems to be okay if I remember to speak directly into it. I've generally been recording during lunch time in my car since It's basically impossible to carve out time at home to sit at like, a desk, with a stand mic.

Fortunately, there are still people on this forum who commute ridiculous distances to Lansing. If you've ever been to Lansing, you understand why people like living far away from there.

During my 232 mile bimonthly one-way commute, I listen to Trump, Inc., which does some nice investigative reporting focused on conflicts of interest between Trump and his businesses.

Also, if you're doing really long drives, Dan Carlin's Hardcore History is excellent. He has some biases, but he's honest and upfront about them. He'll release a podcast about once a month, and the podcast usually lasts 4-5 hours. Right now, he's podcasting about the roots of WW II in Asia.

I'm also trying to relearn Québécois French, so I've been listening to the CBC Radiojournal French language newscasts, which last 10 minutes and are released three or four times a day.

I liked this one but they could have cut one or two episodes or so out (though I guess you could say that with any podcast). I stuck the Zodiac one out, but again, that one went on too long.

I was on a Kennedy run last year. If it's your thing you could binge Cover-Up, on the Chappaquidick case, and The RFK Tapes which somebody here first recommended.

The other true crime I listened to recently was Michael Connelly's Murder Book, that one was pretty good. About a cold case in LA brought to trial almost three decades later.

You Did What Now?

You can at least do me a solid and subscribe and ignore it ;-)

Re: Podcast

can anybody recommend a good podcast for thoughtful conversation about nerd culture (film, tv, comics, books, etc.) that isn't a bunch of bearded hipsters and goth girls sitting around whining, or basement dwellers foaming at the mouth, about how bad the writing of GoT became?

If there isn't one, why don't you start one? I can't think of anyone more qualified.

so i guess that's a "no" then?

I can barely type these words in our little pool here, and you think i could produce a podcast? yeah, that's not happening, but thanks for the vote of confidence.

Pop Culture Happy Hour is okay, but it IS an NPR-produced one, so... less snark, more NPRy.

A bit off-topic, I've always liked You Must Remember This, which is all about deep dives into Old Hollywood stories.

It's actually not that complicated, especially if you don't want to take the time to edit the 'ums' and stutters and such.

There's some startup investment, timewise. setting up blogs/urls/feeds/etc, and figuring out how to get whoever is recording it on the same recording, but after that it's mostly just publishing a blog post and uploading the file. Another few minutes to copy/paste an intro/outro. I might be willing to 'produce' that part of it were TCP.net to decide to record something like that.

Re: Podcast

We did Cocaine and Rhinestones thru the Cooley ep but lost the momentum because we hardly ever drive.

Last weekend drove a lot and started SOMEONE KNOWS SOMETHING which examines cold cases. The host is really good journalist/investigator from Canada; the first 2 seasons examine cases (a disappeared kid and a murder) in Canada. Yesterday I flew to and from Chicago for work and zoomed through Season 3 which looked at a US civil rights case from the 60s I was only vaguely familiar with (an offshoot of the 'Misissippi Burning' thing) that was really outstanding and highly recommend especially if you aren't familiar with the story.

This show is different than some crime podcasts in that it doesn't just tell the story but gets in there and tries to solve the cases, really difficult ones at that.

Was that the one with the missing fiance in Canada? Where the guy proposed to her on TV right before she went missing?

I liked that one a lot. The season with the missing kid was good too. But I didnt listen to Season 3.

Re: Podcast

Yes. We are actually on the home stretch of the fiance one so no spoilers please!

Season 3 is actually a revisiting of a documentary the guy had already made on the topic, but reflects years of research and interviews and is really great. Just 7 eps and the last 1 is a recap
