Yeah, I have some vague memories of that day. In general, I've pretty much been ignoring birthdays for several decades now. But I guess one could make the case that this one, being both a big fat round number and also the first one that was in serious danger of not actually occurring, calls for … I dunno, some kind of acknowledgement. Like maybe as an excuse to play some kick-ass early Elton!! After not having heard this song in who knows how many years, I was re-introduced to it a couple months ago — last November 17th to be precise — by a surprise hearing on a radio show. Originally on Elton's self-titled second album from the spring of 1970, this version of SIXTY YEARS ON is from the 11-17-70 album (or, if you bought it in England, 17-11-70) which was recorded as part of a live broadcast from a NYC studio to a radio audience over WABC-FM, the station shortly afterward to be rebranded as WPLJ. Not originally intended to also be an album release, only after the then growing influence of home taping equipment meant that bootleg copies of the show began showing up in circulation did the record company quickly change their minds and by early 1971 had packaged parts of the show into an official album, one named for the date on which it was aired. All that racket, btw, is being produced by just three people. EJ on piano and vocals obviously, along with long-time drummer Nigel Olsson are providing most of the noise. The late (although he was quite alive at the time) Dee Murray anchored the trio on bass guitar. Also, don't take the general down tone of the song as any indication of my current state of mind. Like I said, I just happened to have had this one dragged out of the backroads by the rivers of my memory via the rare (certainly rare these days) DJ with both the freedom to play songs off the well-beaten path and with an eye for the anniversary of the recording. Plus it's so tough to find number-appropriate songs once you get out of your teens — although in four years have I got a Paul McCartney song to lay on youse guys (I won't reveal what it is so as to not spoil the surprise, but let's just say that you'll have something to look forward to in March of 2023 … aside from the end of the Robinson Cano contract of course.)
