Hey, Nineteen: Jed Lowrie

What is the deal with me?

I mean, I signed with the team back on January 16 for two years and $20 million, I pulled the jersey on (see above) and proclaimed I was all happy and excited to be in the Mets' unlit locker room with the ugly drop tile ceiling:

[TWEET]https://twitter.com/Mets/status/1085691228992294912[/TWEET]

But I haven't been seen in a Mets shirt since, and in the one shot of me in a hat, I look decidedly UN-happy.

https://securea.mlb.com/mlb/images/players/head_shot/476704.jpg>

A strained knee, they tell me. Didn't they do a physical on me before the contract was finalized? I'm not sure they did. Maybe they just asked a bunch of civilians to put on white coats, prod me, and ask questions. Maybe it was a special perk for luxury box owners.

I don't want to be one of those putzes who gets hurt his first spring and never catches up, like Swarzak or ... I don't know ... Putz, I think. I have a pretty slender body for a guy definitely on the back nine of his career, so my knee hasn't taken the beating of a lot of other vets, but my age is my age and there's only so much you can do about that. The Mets have some good players to cover for me, but having been in the American League almost my whole career, I was hoping to use Spring Training to get a good look at the Senior Circuit pitching. Having the Nats, Marlins, and Braves in steady rotation, that might have really helped. Now that idea is gone. Faded like the snows of winter.

I'll be out there, and I intend to be ready when I go. Second, third, and short. I'll be like a light-footed Wilmer. If this damn knee cooperates. I'm taking calcium, doing my PT, easing into the quick cuts in my workouts, and soon I'll be ...

What? What will I be? In 2019, it's a mystery, and I need your help.

Worried. Jason Bay is the other guy you were thinking of.

I'm getting a gamey, distinctly Baylike aroma from his corner of the locker room.

Re: Hey, Nineteen: Jed Lowrie

The comparisons to Jason Bay are, frankly, unfair.

Jason Bay was a much better hitter and younger when the Mets signed him. So while Lowrie may become a disappointment, he won't be as big a disappointment as Bay.

I think eventually Lowrie will get healthy and contribute. But what are we realistically expecting of this guy? Career .749 OPS going into his age 35 season. He's never hit .300, he's never had a .400 OBP (or even been realistically close) and his career SLG is .414. He's hit 20 HR's once in his career (last year) doesn't appear to have any sort of speed (1 SB over his last 5 seasons).

So I don't know.

There are some positives. His best seasons have been his last two, so maybe it's the result of a new approach? And you have to think that taking him out of Oakland will give his numbers a boost. His home-away splits last year were pretty drastic. .710 OPS at home vs. .884 on the road. Also hit 19 of his 24 HR's on the road. So maybe there's room for hope.

I'm guessing OPS in the high .700's, 14 HRs. Plays all around the diamond.

Yeah, Putz sat out the second half after having a shlubby first half.

3 hits last night for Syracuse so it looks like he'll be in the lineup on Tuesday against WSH.

It's true. It'll be interesting to see what they do roster-wise once he's ready. I'd be awfully nervous if I was Todd Frazier. I think he's the odd man out, the way Davis is swinging the bat.

Re: Hey, Nineteen: Jed Lowrie

If Davis' defense were better, he'd make a better case. That's the excuse they'll use- "He needs to go down, play every day and work on his defense".

I could be wrong, in fact I hope I am.

The Captain Tuttle of the 40-man roster. I just took infield with the man.

Sure it suxx ... but think about how good a trading-deadline (or maybe post-deadline?) pickup he'll seem like once he finally does get around to being healthy enough to make the roster.

If and when he returns, I'm guessing neither of those guys eat it. Instead it'll be Adeiny Hech who gets Syracused.

But at this rate, any number of things could happen before Lowrie appears.

Maybe the whole Jed Lowrie thing is a money-skimming scheme.

Re: Hey, Nineteen: Jed Lowrie

Mickey, in his weekly WFAN spot, confirmed that Lowrie exists (he literally said this) and that he's making vague moves toward baseball activities, baseball activities being an expansive umbrella that might include posting to an electronic bulletin board thread that wonders whether Jed Lowrie exists.

Jed Lowrie, utility player, has been recalled to the active roster. He will wear No. 4 and exist.

Great, I'll finally find out what he looks like.

For all I know he could have been the guy I was stuck on an elevator with for five hours last week.

Re: Hey, Nineteen: Jed Lowrie

So, what's the deal here? Do you think this guy isn't actually cleared to play defense. Going against two all-star lefties, the Mets started several lefthanded batters, including CanĂ³ twice, but this guy still hasn't played the field. Or run the bases for that matter.

Do you think the Mets activated him before they otherwise might've, and they don't trust his legs? Or perhaps they just think he's just too far behind to trust with four at-bats in a game?

Re: Hey, Nineteen: Jed Lowrie

Part of me believes that Brodie activated him so no one could say that he signed a player who didn't play all season.
