How strange. How strange that my turn to ask the big Hey, Nineteen! question should come now, when my whole baseball existence is in limbo. How strange that it should fall in this hard little center of the Mets roster filled with catchers. I'm filing just before Tomás Nido, who took my job, and just after Patrick Mazeika, who's gonna take his job, because what comes around goes around, you smug little shit.

I'm sorry. I don't mean to be bitter, but I'll be fucked if I ain't bitter. I mean, not long ago in the big picture, Matt Harvey was the most celebrated pitcher in baseball. Dark Knight, "Har-vey's Bet-ter!" chants, chasing models around town. I mean, he was a tool, but a valuable tool, right? And I got traded for him. Me, Devon Mesoraco! The overpaid oft-injured catcher from Cincinnati way. And yeah, Fangraphs says he had more value than me after the trade, but fuck them. I was Mr. Teammate Guy and he was ... Matt Harvey LOL.

Well, I'm tired of that good teammate bullshit. I signed a minor league contract and the last thing I expected was to play minor league ball. That's just not how I roll. I got a wife and kid and when we filled out our tax return, under OCCUPATION, I put "Major League Baseball Player." Now the Mets are trying to make a liar out of me. A federal criminal! Lying on a federal form! I'm sorry, but no.

So I didn't report to the minors with my minor league contract. I say I had an oral agreement with the Mets to be granted a release if I didn't make the team. Some grown-ass man named "Brodie" tells me that if I thought I had an agreement, I should have asked for it in writing. My agents over at Jet Sports Management are all, "Ummm ... let me get back to you."

So yeah, that's the sitchoo: (1) I've got a contract binding me to the Mets, (2) the Mets farmed me out, (3) I refuse to report, so the Mets don't have to pay me, even though (4) they are retaining my rights. And now (5) I've threatened to retire, and (6) the Mets are all, "Well, we're calling your bluff, but it's not like even if you did retire, we'd let go of your rights."

And (7) I'm like "Oh, consarn it all!"

How strange.

It's all a massive pile of bullshit. But somethings got to give, right? The Mets don't want to dick me around all year, and I don't want to not play all year, as much as I don't want to play minor league ball. It's a gen-u-ine impasse. A Mexican standoff.

If it breaks, anything can happen. If it doesn't, only one thing can happen.

So what's going to happen?

What's going to happen?

Hopefully a lot more hilarious stuff that will be reported here

Who? (That's what we'll be saying about him by August)

Re: Hey, Nineteen, Devin Mesoraco

I have to say, I'd have preferred Mesoraco starting yesterday's game over Nido who came up at least twice in situations where an extra-base hit would have been really important. I mean it's not that extra-base hits are ever unimportant, it was just... They should have PHed for him 3 times but can only do it once.

There's some Twitter wound lickers arguing the Mets are doing this guy dirty but they can't just let a guy walk because he wants to, they'd possibly lose the whole team that way.

That said if Nido continues to have games like yesterday (he also foolishly threw a ball into center field on a ball-4 stealing attempt) I'd consider Meso but he's gotta swallow his pride, fire his agent, report to Syracuse, beat out Rene Rivera, and hope d'Arnaud remains a medical scratch.

Re: Hey, Nineteen, Devin Mesoraco

I missed his second AB, but didn't he drive the first one the opposite way to deepish right?

checks

96.5 EV, 325 feet. .340 expected batting average on that.

I suspect if Mes had just reported he'd get released when d'Arnaud was ready. But who knows now. They'll probably hold him on principle for a little while longer unless someone actually wants to trade for him.

He'd have to be better than Nido, right? Man, he's one of those "you know shit went bad if he's in the lineup" guys, if ever there was one (Nido, I mean, not Devin "Uggs McMurtry" Mesoraco).

It's not like they have any reason to be married to Colton Plaia.

They just want to be sure d'Arnaud's arm doesn't fall off while he's shaving or something. Then they'll let him go.

Re: Hey, Nineteen, Devin Mesoraco

-> d'Arnaud looks d'one.

-> Nido is not the answer.

-> Mesoraco didn't suck in 2018. He wasn't bad at all as deGrom's caddy.

-> DeGrom looks like he can use a good caddy again.

So, is there any reason not to end the silly Mes-Mets lovers' spat and give Devin a shot as Ramos' backup?

I'd say that the Mets signed him to be just that guy, ready to step up if d'Arnaud hadn't shown by May that he could be an effective backup, but Mes wouldn't consent to go down and wait for that opportunity. Now that he's needed, he's painted himself into a corner by sitting out.

Re: Hey, Nineteen, Devin Mesoraco

Mesoraco did a fine job last year by me. Devin has one advantage, he is a better receiver than d'arnit on Travis's best day. If Travis doesn't hit why is Devin not up?

Re: Hey, Nineteen, Devin Mesoraco

Meso can unrestrict himself at any time by agreeing to go to Syracuse. Perhaps BVW can "wink wink" with him to convey that if Nido is hitting .200 in two weeks then Meso will be recalled.
