Have they not examined him throughout spring training? Maybe it's been too long, but I don't recall extensions of players already under contract to be dependent on a fizz.

I think it's a 5-year extension, with a full no trade clause, but an opt out in 2022.

This is a very good way to start the day.

Brodie pulling out the old exit-clause AND a no-trade clause.

Whether deGrom comes to love the Mets too much to leave, or to hate the Mets too much to stay, he controls his own fate.

The previously agreed to $17M for 2019 is part of this, with $10M broken out as signing bonus. Jake opt-out after 2022; club option for 2024.

This is a wonderful day. The Mets have been so bad historically at taking care of their homegrown guys. Hopefully this is a signal to the guys next in line that they'll be taken care of.

Sounds like it was pretty Chris Sale-y in the end, huh. Seems unlikely he'd want to opt-out after 3 seasons and leave > $60M on the table ahead of the season where he turns 35. Unless he's still just fucking torching the league, then go, Jake, go.

Also, I know stylistic rules say to never start the sentence with a lowercase letter, but seeing a capital D "DeGrom" always looks funny to me. It's changing the man's name.

Re: DeGrom Deal Done

For all the skepticism that greeted his arrival, BVW has done a darn good job.

Locked up the best player on an expensive, long-term deal. Addressed the team's weaknesses at catcher with one of the best free agents at the position. Got an elite closer and a familiar co-closer/set up guy. Made a big deal for what we hope is a reliable offensive second baseman while moving the Bruce contract. Restocked a barren Triple-A team with veterans for insurance. Got some versatile guys.

And, didn't trade Syndergaard, didn't trade McNeil, apparently isn't keeping Alonso in the minors for a month. Brought in a strong bench coach to boost Mickey.

And while it's not his doing, we're getting a Seaver statue and the street name.

We beat the hell out of them when they screw up, and we should. But they deserve credit when they do the right thing.

Totally. If he's in a position to seriously consider opting out at that point, we've got at least one division title under our belts, hopefully more.

Great job by the Mets to lock him up possibly for his whole career. Every deal comes with risks, but this is one I'm willing to take.

Hopefully they extend the others (Wheeler, Conforto, Noah) and surround those guys with enough talent that we compete for years to come.

$52.5 million of deGrom's new deal will be money deferred until the 2030's

So right about the time when those annual lol-Mets/Bonilla stories should be petering out, the press will have deGrom payment stories to chuckle over.

Not that I have any expectation of this, but I hope that the press would treat those situations fairly.

Locking up a Cy Young winner and deferring some money to try to win a title is one thing. Buying out a bad contract through a payment plan that only makes sense if you continue to get Ponzi-scheme like returns on you current investment is another.

And they'll all ignore the hard facts that deGrom won't be paying taxes on that as a (likely) resident of Florida and no longer a New York employee and will end up taking home more of it.

Hell, the same with Bonilla. Yes, they were banking on a lot of interest, but even at a more conservative rate of return they probably still made out long term.

also this is super commonplace.

Re: DeGrom Deal Done

I'd like to think I'm pretty tough on the media myself, but I feel like the Bonilla deal gets mocked for a bunch of different reasons. Specifically:

1. It's Bobby Bonilla. And I guess more importantly, it's Bobby Bonilla and the Mets. It was a mistake to get him the first time, it was a mistake to get him the second time, and now the Mets have to be reminded of that mistake into perpetuity.

2. Bonilla happened because of Rojas. We were trying to dump the $4.5 million owed to Rojas. So in dumping a bad contract, we took on an even worse contract. Bonilla had 2 years left at $5.9 million per. So the Mets somehow turned $4.5 in bad contracts into $34.5 million. And I get it present value, blah blah blah, but the numbers are laughable.

3. Deferred money is expected when you sign a star. Like Jake. Deferred money for a malcontent because you were trying to dump the contract of a middle reliever? Well...

4. Madoff. This is a big part of the story.

Ceetar
Mar 28 2019 08:10 AM
Re: DeGrom Deal Done

I think they were stealing more than that with Madoff, and they got what, 12 years or something of it on that money already? And then you have to factor in present value.

Also that Bonilla's contract is like bagel money to them even if it ended up being a wash instead of a windfall for both of them.
