Now Do Wheeler

I guess they'll say there isn't enough time.

I think the timing of this was intentional.

Wheeler is more complicated because he has less of a track record. He probably prefers to try to bolster his value with a solid 2019 before signing a multi-year contract.

LOOK AT ME! I'M TALL, BALD, AND I TAKE TWO YEARS TO RECOVER!

I don't really have a good Wheeler imitation.

That's why I thought he might be had cheaper.

I thought it would be worth a try.

Well, to the extent that JdG said he'd no longer engage in talks once the season started and (not stated, but implied) that he'd have a lot less incentive to long-term-it a year from now seeing as he'd be much closer to FA-gency ... Hell yeah it was intentional.

I'd almost rather lock up Syndergaard first. I don't want Wheeler to walk, but he had a fantastic half season. There's plenty of time to talk to him.

Agree. Thor is next.

meh, Wheeler is awesome, was a top prospect, but has a shorter track record but is a free agent. He's the perfect lockup guy. I'd have done it before deGrom. Mets have more data on whether or not the second two thirds of the season were process or fluke too.

You got years with Thor.

Wait, why do we feel like there's plenty of time to talk to Wheeler? He's a free agent at the end of this season.

Re: Now Do Wheeler

I like Wheeler too, but id rather get stuck paying him market rate in the fall after he proves it for another year. What kind of discount is Wheeler going to give you now versus the chances of injury or ineffectiveness?

I don't know. But you ask, don't you? What if he would do a 3 year deal at $15 per.

Plenty of time in that you have this season to keep talking. If he kicks butt, make him a fair offer. He might be tempted to try free agency, but that hasn't gone great for everyone - as we know. He may want the sure thing of a fair extension. But I think Thor has greater value for the team long term, and he's been grumbling about people getting paid. If you can lock up his arbitration years and beyond, it's a win - unless he ends up with TJ.

Id make them both fair offers, but I cant break the bank on Wheelers track record.

I wouldn't assume he hasn't been asked. If I were Wheeler I would take 3 and 45, but if he's feeling good about this season I would totally get it if he preferred to bet on himself.
