The Boys from Syracuse: The Syracuse Mets in 2019

What comes around goes around. It just takes some time sometimes. Such is it with the Syracuse International League franchise, affiliated with the Mets this year for the first time since the beginning — 1962 — when a lowly Syracuse Chiefs team was shared as an affiliate between the Mets and the Washington Senators. Those Syracusans (managed by Mr. Double No-Hit Johnny Vandermeer) finished dead last, 41 whole games behind the pacesetters in 1962, so the new version of the team doesn't exactly have a tough act to follow. The latter-day team, re-christened the Mets (as the parent organization is also the owner), is as notable for who is absent — starting pitchers P.J. Conlon, Zach Lee, and Walter Lockett; reliever Chris Mazza, and (!!) infielder Gavin Cecchini. They've moved Travis Taijeron to first, making room among the pile of big league vets in the outfield for Tim Tebow. Travis had never played first before last season in Albuquerque, where he logged 22 games at the cold corner. This opening was made possible by both Pete Alonso and Dom Smith making the roster with the big club. Cecchini would seem to be a victim of numbers, but no, he's been bumped in favor of organization man David Thompson, so he looks like he's in a make or break year. The openings in the rotation left behind by Conlon, Lee, and Lockett appear to be going to swingmen Casey Coleman ("Watchoo talkin' 'bout?! You can look it up!") and Hector Santiago. Santiago was pretty smelly out of a starting role in camp, so they saw something that didn't come through in the games. Taking the Vandermeer role is Tony DeFrancesco, arriving from Las Vegas with most of his staff. A notable exception is former replacement player Joel Chimelis, arriving from the Houston system with an impressive track record. He coaches the hitters. Altogether, 21 of 25 players have major league experience, including many years at the big league level for three of their veteran outfielders. The action begins Thursday with the Mets (yeah!) hosting Pawtucket. No starter has been announced, but look for Drew Gagnon to get the bump. The forecast for Thursday is mid 50's. If there's some sunshine, well, a 2:05 start, I may be able to take a couple of hours of time off and take in the opener (the Google sez I am 16 minutes of driving from work to the stadium). Generally speaking we don't go to many games before the kids get out of school, but, hey, these are METS GAMES we are talking about.

Not only did Syracuse drop their opener to the Pawtucket Red Sox 6-3 in 10 innings after Daniel Zamora blew the lead in regulation, but a minor insult was added to the injury, as Jenrry Mejia came on in the bottom of the 10th to earn the save for the Sox.

Since the opening day loss, the Syracuse Mets are undefeated, having upped their record to 4-1, tied for the top record in the International League. Destroying it at the plate so far has been Dilson Hererra. The super-destructive Son of a Dil has gone 7-for-his-first-11, with four of those hits — three doubles and a homer — going for extra bases. When Frazier comes back, and maybe Lowrie, DH is going to slide even further down the depth chart, but when the guy's head hit the pillow last night with a .636 / .692 / 1.182 // 1.874, it's certainly an open question whether he should, small sample size and all. The star of the first time through the rotation was Drew Gagnon. Orange-and-Blue Drew went five shutout innings on Sunday against the always-dangerous Pawtucket Red Sox on Sunday, striking out five, walking but one, and surrendering only three hits. Looking good, Dirtbag. Anchoring the pen so far has been the mellifluously named Arquimedes Caminero. Arquie has already saved two games, throwing 2 1/3 innings in his first two appearances, allowing no runs on three hits. The OrangeMets host Rochester tonight, with the starter as yet un-named. It's Taco Tuesday, so fans can purchase three delicious handmade tacos for $8 from one of the many taco carts at NBT Bank Stadium. The Trump campaign was right in warning us that there would be taco trucks on every corner. They were just gloriously wrong about him being able to do anything to stop it. I am personally waiting for better weather (though last night the temps were fantastic, 60 degrees at first pitch, but I am on call all week and can't really do my job from there if called upon).

You know, for all of the turnover for The New York Mets this offseason, Jeurys Familia's re-acquisition has represented the lone return of a prodigal son. With all of the offseason acquisitions, Familia Man has been the only recidivist Met to appear on the MLB roster. It's certainly different for The Syracuse Mets however, with a look down their roster boasting a series of names that the Long Island Ducks would envy: René Rivera, Dilson Herrera, Ruben Tejada, Carlos Gomez, and Travis Taijeron. You'd see the appeal of bringing back old Mets to excite the organization's supporters in AAA, if it wasn't the team's first season in Syracuse, and so few fans could be expected to have any attachment to these names. It's almost like Omar Minaya is working for the team again. Anyhow, the OrangeMets are moving along and taking their series, going since an opening day loss, good for fourth place among six teams in the International League North Division, sitting a mere two games off the pace. That's all while taking it up the pipe offensively. No longer enjoying the fair desert air of Las Vegas, the AAA Mets are next to last in the International League batting ratings, with none of their players appearing in the league's top 30 OPSers, but Travis Taijeron is starting to grab the baton and run with it. Already three homeruns into his season, TT is leading the team with a .276 / .417 / .690 // 1.106 line in 10 games, to go along with 13 strikeouts, which ties Tim Tebow for the team lead. Being eased into the rotation is big league vet Casey Coleman. The horrific lab-created hybrid of Casey Stengel and Vince Coleman has only been allowed eight innings in his first two starts, but he has struck out eight over them and should be stretching it out more, now that Drew Gagnon has joined the big team. Case has allowed only three runs, but they've all been on solo homers, so the jury is out whether he's been lucky or good, but we should find out soon enough. The surprise out of the pen has been our old buddy Paul Sewald. The Seamonster earned his promotion to Flushing by throwing shutout ball through his first four appearances covering 5 1/3 innings. He's only struck out two, but he's only walked one, and that last total sounds positively delightful after watching the Met bullpen walk all of Delaware County in the high winds of Philadelphia last night. With last nights game against the Rochester Red Wings rained out, the two teams earned themselves a double-header this evening, with TBD listed to start both games. A 7-2 win yestereve over The Buffalo Bisons was the fourth in a row for The Syracuse Mets, in the midst of a nine-game homestand, giving them six wins in their last 10 and running their record to 11-7, good for second place in The International League North Division, only two games behind the dreaded Lehigh Valley IronPigs. Travis Taijeron must like the upstate ambience, because he has been a thundermaking maniac, hitting seven homers in his last 10 games, while going .290 / .389 / 1.000 // 1.389 over that period. I don't know if suddenly Taijeron Powers' performance has some major league applicability, but he has been exclusively a firstbaseman this season, so if you put him on the depth chart behind Alonso and Smith, that's some pretty wicked depth at the cold corner. I hate to report on the same guy two weeks in a row, but a day of 10 total bases will change your mind. After taking a spanking his first time after being activated from the DL, Zach Lee has been a guy whose turn in the rotation is something to look forward too. ZachLee-Who'm-I-S'posed-to-Be?j has hit the gas pedal his last two starts, giving up two runs in 10 innings total, walking four and striking out seven to go along with that sugary sweet 1.80 ERA. Did somebody say 1.80 ERA?! Oh, that's right! I DID!! Well, Blackjack Zach isn't the only one wearing that number on a gold chain around his neck. Recently promoted lefthanded reliever Daniel Zamora, has been unscored upon since giving up a nugget in his first appearance. He's struck out five in as many innings of work, while walking only one. In fact, after seeing his 0.60 WHIP and .118 batting average against, I kind of want to call him up a second time just to make a point. Remember that DZ — who came to the Mets in the 2017-2018 offseason in a deal for fellow lefty bullpenner Josh Smoker — had a 3.00 ERA in his nine innings of work as a peripheral Met last season. If you're curious about seeing him stick around the big club a little bit during all this intra-division play, and seeing how he can do against your Bryce Harpers, your Juan Sotos, and your Freddie Freemen, you probably aren't alone. You may be something closer to alone if you've digging on this start by the newly named Syracuse Mets, though. Next to last in International League attendance in 2018, the new affiliation, new players, new name, and strong start has only bumped them up to third-to-last this season. COME ON, PEOPLE! He's only made two errors in 181 2/3 innings on defense. For a while there, it was thought that the Yankees would be interested in re-acquiring him via trade. The Mets, though, they will need a backup shortstop eventually, and possibly sooner, rather than later. =#0040FF]Cool Adeiny Hechavarria Trivia: He has an older brother named Alien. He may not have shown much (at all) so far at the big league level, but Corey Oswalt really made stiffs of Pawtucket his last time out, throwing a seven-inning complete game against the Sox, striking out six and walking only one while allowing the two runs in the 5-2 win. =#0040FF]Cool Corey Oswalt Trivia: Growing up in San Diego, Corey had the honor of being personally scouted and recruited by Mets big shot Paul dePodesta. On the other hand, he was also personally recruited by San Diego State coach Tony Gwynn to play infield for the Aztecs. Having grown to 6'4", he decided he was too big to be a shortstop and didn't have enough power to make it at third, so he went with the pitching route and the Mets. The oldest AAA team in baseball has had a lot of yeoman's work from their firemen. And in recent weeks, one of the standouts has been 2015 seventh-rounder Corey Taylor. The Atom's Core has thrown 7 2/3 straight innings of scoreless baseball, lowering his ERA to 1.84 over 14 2/3 innings. Lastly, the catching rotation is down to René Rivera and Colton Plaia. That's probably not ideal, and if Devon Mesoraco isn't kicking himself right now, somebody should be kicking him. If Travis d'Arnaud doesn't clear waivers and end up in Syracuse, look for the Mets to possibly add another vet, to make Mes feel that much stupider and make their AAA team that much older.
