Meanwhile, here in Baltimore is a reality check for the ages. Chris Davis, coming off one of the truly worst seasons in history (despite hitting a homerun against the Mets) for which he was paid $23,000,000, has started 2019 in an 0-for-23 void. Combined with his crawling across the finish line in 2018, his current hitless streak has reached 0-for-44. This is two shy of the MLB futility steak record set by Eugenio Velez across the 2010 and 2011 seasons, split between the San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers. I have to say, he looks so defeated that you get the idea he's going to fly past that record. If the Orioles let him. I honestly didn't think that things could get worse for the guy. Of course, I look at his salary and immediately stop feeling bad for him.

From what I've read, he's handling it with class. No well-intended person should have to live with constant humiliation. I feel for the guy.

So on the one hand you've got Davis trying not to extend his streak tonight. And on the other you have Washington reliever Trevor Rosenthal working on a streak of his own. So far this season the one-time StL closer has faced nine batters across four different outings (3 vs the mighty NYM) and has yet to retire a single one of them. Outing #1: (starting the top of the 8th) Infield single (to Wilson Ramos of all people) - Single - Walk - RBI Single Outing #2: (came in w/runners on 1st & 3rd - 1 out) RBI Single Outing #3: (top 8, runner on 1st, 1 out vs Philly) Walk, Walk Outing #4: (starting top 8, 6-run lead) HBP - Wild Pitch - Wild Pitch - Walk The only saving grace in his 4th outing was that the guy who relieved him got out of the 1st+3rd/no-out situation so neither of the 2 runners Rosenthal put on scored. Prior to that, not only had he allowed 7 straight batters to reach but all seven wound up scoring either while he was still in the game or just after he left and were charged to him. Line so far: 4 appearances, 9 batters faced, 0.0 innings pitched, 7 ER on 4 hits + 2 Walks + 1 HBP + 2 WP ... all resulting in the dreaded 'Infinite' ERA Obviously Davis's streak is longer (even though I question the concept of "streaks" that span pieces of two seasons) and his is made much worse by the fact that he's still less than halfway through a $100 mil+ contract. But of course hitting is harder than preventing hitting so a guy, even one coming off a missed season, who is supposed to succeed 70+% of the time gets a shorter leash than does the power hitter who was never a high BA guy in the first place.

Losses assigned to pitchers are a pretty arbitrary statistic. And Anthony Young saved at least 15 games during that loss streak.

Chris Davis not in the lineup today in Baltimore's loss to Oakland Khris Davis, on the other side of the field, went 1-for-5 for the A's Nor did Trevor Rosenthal get in the game for Washington (Nats beat Phils in extras)
