Clifton Strengths

Apparently these are becoming a thing. We've been taking the Clifton Strengths Assessment at work, and even started to see people list their top five on their resumes.

The get the strengths, you answer a bunch of questions and the computer analyzes the answers to list your top five. (You can pay more to go beyond that, but we stopped at the top five.)

I'm usually pretty skeptical about these things, but my wife thinks these are pretty spot on.

Have you guys taken this?

Here's my top five:

Clifton Strengths assessment

Positivity

People who are especially talented in the positivity theme have an enthusiasm that is contagious. They are upbeat and can get others excited about what they are going to do.

Achiever

People who are especially talented in the achiever theme have a great deal of stamina and work hard. They take satisfaction from being busy and productive.

Arranger

People who are especially talented in the arranger theme can organize, but they also have a flexibility that complements this ability. They like to figure out how all of the pieces and resources can be arranged for maximum productivity.

Developer

People who are especially talented in the developer theme recognize and cultivate the potential in others. They spot the signs of each small improvement and derive satisfaction from these improvements.

Belief

People who are especially talented in the belief theme have certain core values that are unchanging. Out of these values emerges a defined purpose for their life.

Re: Clifton Strengths

Rather than ranking the strengths, some tests combine them to give a picture of you. One of those is the Myers-Briggs personality test.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myers%E2%80%93Briggs_Type_Indicator

It takes about 10 minutes and some Companies give it to determine how to leverage the strengths of their employees in a best-fit position.

I'm more than a bit skeptical of these sorts of "tests".

The problem is that while they may point to a trend towards one end of the scale or another in some kind of attributes, they tend to get analyzed and treated as if they're absolutes in those areas and as

if those taking them slot easily into a one-size/fits-all world. They might be better at determining true strengths and weaknesses than handwriting analysis, but I question how much.

You want 'a picture of me'? Take a photo.

Re: Clifton Strengths

After enduring TQM "tools" for a number of years and then going through Myers-Briggs three separate times, my money is on MBTI as a great self-understanding tool. It truly helps those of us who have been slapped over our "I"-ness in the workplace. It would be no surprise to me to find out my top strength would be Arranger because that's what my MBTI result says. All three times.

No one gives me power, but If I WAS looking to hire someone I'd immediately dump resumes with this sorta crap on it.

I ended up not hiring the person who listed the Clifton Strengths, but listing them wasn't a factor. I did take note of them to see if the strengths listed were qualities I needed in the position.

Re: Clifton Strengths

My Myers Briggs scores have been the same each time I took the test, and seem to present a very accurate picture of my personality.

I do hire people on occasion, and I'd probably be negatively inclined toward this kind of stuff on a resume.

I generally know in less than 60 seconds whether I want to hire someone. I throw an offbeat question at them and see how they react.

I've had the opposite feeling, where I know, at least suspect, pretty fast I wouldn't be happy working there.

Of course, I've taken plenty of jobs after feeling that (and having it confirmed)

Over the years I've hired maybe a half-dozen people. I used their BEBTQ* for

the most part to evaluate them. The lower the BEBTQ the better.

Okay already. We get it. You're the greatest boy in the whole wide world because you score well on scammy internet personality tests and you post sappy Switchfoot lyrics about love, love love and then tell us how much you love love. I can't believe you haven't won the Nobel Peace Prize yet between all of that and on top of that, you watch Winnie the Pooh movies, too. Do you also run outside in the middle of the night in your underwears to help half blind little old ladies cross the street? What's next? Are you gonna show us the red stars your second grade teacher glued to your report card to mark your achievements in attendance? What a self-aggrandizer. I bet that internet test didn't ask you if you support stealing babies from innocent mothers seeking asylum legally.

I once conducted an interview in my shorts wearing an African Tribal mask. Candidate never batted an eye and I hired them on the spot.

That's pretty wild! Our HR team has many, many rules and a very structured process. We have to ask all the candidates the same questions in the same way -- with no follow-ups. The only chance we have to poke a little deeper is at the end, when the candidate asks the questions and we can answer without a script.

One reason I think companies and/or departments go for this sort of stuff is that it frees them from any kind of subjective thinking in the hiring process.

'Hey, the experts say that this test shows who's the best leader, best people person, best organized, etc., so if we hire those with the highest scores

and it turns out not to be true then it's not our fault. Plus no one can fault us for any kind of discriminatory practices'

Rutt's Hut has great hot dogs. Its schools are okay. It's close-ish to the city?

Never done a Clifton thing, but I'm pretty consistently an ENTP-T, apparently.
