This is one poll that Sports Illustrated won't win. I voted for that Sport Magazine cover with Tom Seaver.

I don't really like any of these (though BD does have me wondering what the ten biggest outs in baseball history were). Sport at least seems to be trying here, so I'll give them the nod for effort.

When I was a young reporter looking to advance, I had a weeklong tryout at the Vindicator. About three staff members approached me during the week and said “Under no circumstances take this job. This is a terrible place.” By Wednesday of the week I knew this was not a place I'd want to move to or work at. But I stayed the full week to live up to the commitment. But the Parade cover with Nancy Seaver is cool.

I went with Wright. Simply because I don't like any of the other covers. I've seen the Seaver painting one before. I dunno. To me it's kinda goofy and dumb. It's never been more apparent than this last week (with the health news, and the magazine covers) how little Seaver means to me. And in a way, I've always felt a little bit of disconnect from other Mets fans because of it. My first season watching the Mets was 1983, and I was only 8 and didn't watch that many games. And to be honest, I don't remember him much. The only feeling I remember having was that I'd heard about Seaver, and I was told how great he was, but just seemed to be ok as far as I could tell. Then he was gone. I didn't hear anything about him again until 1986, and that he might show up with the Red Sox, but wasn't going to be able to pitch. My first real experience with Seaver was during his comeback bid with the Mets. I was older, I think 12?, appreciated the history a little more and was looking forward to seeing him. But then he retired and that was it. Unfortunately most of my memories of Seaver are as of him as an announcer. And in that sense, I found him insufferable. I had occasion to ride the elevator at Shea with him once, when my son was young, and looked for an opportunity to introduce him. But Seaver, stone-faced, looked straight ahead clearly not wanting anything to do with the young fan who would have been able to tell the story of meeting the Franchise for the rest of his life. So whatever. I'm sorry he has dementia, because it's something no human being should ever go through, but as far as any emotional connection to the Mets...well yeah. Whatever.

I don't know why having an emotional connection to the cover subject is necessary to vote for that cover, but to each his own. Would you like that SPORT cover better if it was a shot of deGrom instead, posed exactly like Seaver?

It's not necessary to vote for a cover. But of course an emotional connection is part of what makes a cover special. Unless Seaver means something to you, those first two covers are pretty dumb. But here they've captured 13 out of 15 votes.

Sport went to a lot of trouble and Seaver played along. That's impressive on its own steam. The execution carries the day. The Parade cover looks out of date for 1969. If it were from 1967, I'd be inclined to go with it because how about Tom and Nancy busting through the Sunday supplements as a rookie? David's cover might have been the last TSN I bought. Blue skies shining on us in 2009! Jefferies needs a slightly smaller helmet. Or maybe a slightly bigger head...literally.

I'd also add Seaver often talked about pitching as his art, so Sport wasn't just doodling around with this concept.

It won't show up here as an entry, but the Parade cover is a nice prequel to the People cover of Tom and Nancy eight years later (where they're both wearing...ugh...Reds jerseys).

Twenty years ago we had next door neighbors named Tom and Nancy and I never made the connection with the Seavers until now.

I tend to think of the People cover as the poorly conceived, rushed-to-market sequel to the Parade one.

There are two more Tom and Nancy covers. We'll see one tomorrow in Round 1.07 and another on April 11 in Round 1.16.

I voted for Tom and Nancy. Remember, that's 50-year-old newsprint so it was probably brighter and a little crisper when it came out. Just love G Thomas in the classic flannel and the Mets logo in the scoreboard where the screen used to be. (How many years was that thing even working?) Nancy looks splendid in red, and they're clearly a nice couple. The Sport cover is a classic, too. I'd vote for it in just about any other round. I had good experiences in the times i've met him. Always a hero to me.
