The assumption is that he'd automatically be an upgrade for the rotation but that's hardly a given.

Fuck the pick. Sign Keuchel now while others are unwilling.

And what do you do in the preceding month? He might not even be good, especially given the layoff. Oh and also, doing things that 29 other teams seem to think is a bad idea is usually something the Mets get killed for.

They might. Steamer still somehow projects Keuchel for about 2.3 fWAR in 145 IP. Fangraphs projected standings are Nats 89 Mets 85 Phillies 84 Braves 83. Assuming that extremely optimistic take on Keuchel's volume if not his ability, 2-2.5 wins barely moves the needle. Dan Sabo%%rski... the ZiPS guy, projected Gio might give the Mets an additional 6% of making the playoffs. Keuchel is projected a little better than that, so maybe 7 or 8? Thats a nice bump for little expenditure (depending how many additional possibly bad years you ahve to take Dallas for), but an estimate of a slight bump in playoff odds (that are already reasonably high) is not exactly "BETTER DO THIS OR ELSE"
