I know I've been over-dramatic about shit, but it's hard not to see this as a symbol of civilization going up in flames.

You're not the only one with that thought.

Awful. We were lucky enough to tour it in 2013 and it was stunning. Such a horrible loss; irreplaceable.

Re: Notre-Dame de Paris

Right?

What a real president says: "Mrs. Trump and I share the horror and prayers of every Frenchman and Frenchwoman as we witness the burning of the Cathedral of Notre Dame, home to some of the world's noblest art and itself an enduring symbol of the best aspirations of humankind. I've called President Macron and Archbishop Aupetit and shared with them the prayers and solidarity of the American people, and I've assured them that we stand ready to assist, as we always stand by our friends amidst their greatest challenges and tragedies.”

What our president says: “Parisians should have raked their cathedrals like the Norwegians do.”

Re: Notre-Dame de Paris

Paris will get more sympathy from our past Presidents than this one. I can totally see Jimmy Carter going over to personally help rebuild if he were still up to it

Re: Notre-Dame de Paris

Thanks to quick thinking from the staff/firefighters, a bunch of the relics and stained glass was apparently removed/kept intact.

I like to think they had an art-evacuation plan in place.

And a don't-bomb-out-the-walls-with-water-tankers plan.

lots and lots of people are posting photos, often from years back, of either notre dame itself, or of themselves standing near to notre dame.
