Guess which publication died in 2019

Reports all over that ESPN the Magazine will halt publication with the September issue.

I used to subscribe. But it's been years since I bought or even flipped through one.

I think there were four or five Mets covers -- I'm sure they'll be popping up soon in the brackets!

A good magazine in spite of its beginnings as the anti-SI, which was supposed to be edgier and younger and whatever other nonsense they sold ad agencies. Some very worthy articles along the way, which I've read exclusively online in the past decade-plus, as I imagine most people have ingested its content. Perplexing in retrospect that the play in 1998, as the Internet was taking hold, was to take an electronic brand into print, but prescience always looks obvious after the fact.

We'll be seeing two covers from ESPN Magazine. The first one will be next week.

i found them to be terrible and the second half of my subscription went straight into the recycling bin unread.

When I picked it up, I found that the quick-hit, news-in-brief front matter before the features — that made for a few interesting pages before the features in Sports Illustrated, went about 30 pages deep in ESPN. It made it feel like the garnish was the meal.

Which isn't to say I didn't find some good features if and when I did make it to the features. But the preponderance of short, graphic-heavy trivial fare gave me the idea that they were toilet reading and they knew it.

Pretty sure the only time I read it was on the toilet.

It's amazing how many magazines are still somewhat alive. There's like

thousands of them still at the newsstand stores in Grand Central.

Saw it occasionally when it first came out but never went out of my way to read it and haven't even seen one in years.

The 'bathroom reading' quotes are interesting in that, as time went on, ESPN increasing gave you the impression that they were hiding their better stuff behind a pay wall and so the print editions truly were mostly garnish.

And finally, as much as I don't wish to see another example of print medium dying out, anytime a piece of the Four-Letter network falls away I feel happy inside.

The only place I used to read it was in the waiting room where I get my car's oil changed.

I'm glad they did it quickly.

I notice that they're ceasing publication After the release of this year's 'Body Issue'.

Also I suspect the 'BI' still might remain an annual thing ... either that or they'll hide it behind a pay wall in an attempt to hijack more money out of their groupies [#ESPN app]
