I'm not sure how many handicap points I'm supposed to give the newsprint magazines when comparing them to the glossies. I certainly want to vote for the Frisella/McGraw shot, but how can that compare to the rich saturation Darling gets? Even if the composition was on a par (which it's not), the print can never be.



It was easy to dismiss the stiff, pants-pooping Darling cover from GQ, but here we have him in his element and in his glory. SI gets my vote.

This is a death bracket. So many awesome covers in this one. I went with the Daily News magazine, which celebrates the team, rather than an individual player -- probably the Mets greatest achievement. The Mets finest hour, indeed! I own a mint condition copy of this mag and had even considered framing it to hang on a wall. It looks beautiful up close. The cover shot has sort of a painterly effect. I wish some of our experienced photographers could explain this effect. Is that simply the film used to take that sweeping shot of Shea as Kooz and Grote embrace and Ed Charles does that dance of sheer joy? I like the way the red ushers' uniforms pop out. The relatively tiny picture of the mag doesn't do it the justice it deserves because the details are so fine.

Agree these are all terrific covers.



I really want to love the Pedro treatment, and I do from a graphic standpoint, but man, that 2005 Spring Training get-up is unfortunate. Then again, it does represent the Mets' attempt to make themselves over (again) during that period when being the Mets was never enough for them.



I'd never seen this Sunday News magazine cover (it's possible I did when it came out but I don't remember it). That is a great reflection of what they were coming off of as the new season was coming into focus. Teams defending titles always have to "put it behind us" in quest of next year, but this picture evokes the song first sung by former Spinners lead vocalist G.C. Cameron on the Cooley High soundtrack (and later made better-known by Boyz II Men): it's so hard to say goodbye to yesterday. The 1969 achievement just hung over the 1970 season -- and the entire decade to follow -- like a friendly shadow.



And you got all that as a bonus to your Dondi, your Blondie and your Gasoline Alley. My gosh, I loved the Sunday News, even when the magazine was long gone. The 1990-1991 strike that temporarily eliminated that part of my weekly routine felt like such a void. I didn't give up on the print edition until a couple of years ago because I so loved the ritual.



Tug and Danny's bullpen cart almost looks like it has flipped its bill up the way ballplayers would do when they wanted to be wacky. Definitely adds to its cachet (though throughout this, I've had a hard time squaring a weekly newspaper in the context of magazines -- I'm glad these images are part of the sweep of history we're considering, but in my mind, The Sporting News isn't a magazine).



Whatever one's thoughts are on the racing stripes, they always looked good in pitching action shots at Shea like the one that graces SI. After seeing so many of them in the Derby, I'm becoming convinced they were partly responsible for lowering Doc's ERA by a couple of tenths of a point.



With respect for each, I have to go with Darling. It's a classic look all around.

I love this cover. It had to be shot on Kodachrome (for a full explanation, see Simon, Paul ;-) )

You should check out TSN from about mid-1969, when they transitioned from b&w to color covers, through the late 70s - '76 or '77. TSN put out some of the best sports covers in the business: minimalist uncluttered shots on as large a canvas as there was -- maybe even bigger than the NYT footprint.



And that Daily News mag is way more saturated than the Darling SI cover. It's not even a close call. But it might not be so obvious from this thread because the image used in the derby might be a little faded. I suppose glossy stock holds up better with age than newsprint paper stock.

I love this cover. It had to be shot on Kodachrome (for a full explanation, see Simon, Paul ;-) )


Thanks. I thought it was Kodachrome, but not being a photographer, I wasn't sure. I love that "Kodachrome" look. When I fool around with photo manipulation software when I make custom baseball cards, I sometimes try to recreate that look, but with only middling success.
