Vargas's return means Guillorme's departure. Frazier is the backup middle infielder should one be required.

Deep into the significance of Gomez and Vargas playing together for the first time since 2007, I decided this was a game not starting until 7:10 PM. I was sitting here for 40 minutes, awake and doing other things, oblivious to a Met game taking place.

I don't think that's happened since 2003.

Keith is livid today about the passive baseball both teams are playing.

Confusing how we can't trust back-end starter Jason Vargas with the sixth, but we can trust back-end starter Wilmer Font with the ninth.

Thanks to Jacoby Jones for playing Frazier 400 feet from home plate.

Don't get what Mickey's doing here. Takes out Diaz and Alonzo for Wilmer Font.

What good did it do for Mickey to declare Diaz off limits for 4-out saves or say he'd never dare use a pitcher to pinch run.

It's almost Wilponian how he's making a show of having changed his mind

C'mon, Matzy. If we wanted station-to-station baserunning, we'd have stuck with Ramos.

What good is replacing Wilson if you still get the Wilson Doctrine?

So back-to-back half-innings [B-11, T-12] with bases-loaded/one-out ... and neither produces a run!!

Went to the game. Glad to see Ramos producing a little.

What the hell happened with Diaz? Let's run this down:

Gsellman's pitching in the 8th, his second inning of work.

With one out, he lets up a double to Harrison. This is a fast runner; we know this because it was a hustle double. He's the tying run, definitely in scoring position.

Gsellman stays in against the righty Greiner. Gets a ground ball out. Harrison moves to third, but there are now two outs.

Mickey then goes to Diaz. Ok, sure, we're going for a 4 put save. The Tigers are awful, it's their 8 hitter, Jacoby Jones is hitting well under .200, but ok, the closer comes in.

Diaz lets up a single and the game is tied. He faces one more batter, strikes him out. 13 pitches total.

Mets go down in order. Pitcher spot doesn't come up. Diaz is lifted and doesn't pitch the ninth.

So if the plan was a four out save (which Mickey admitted was the plan) but the second he allows one hit, you pull him? This doesn't make sense.

Got to tip the hat to the Mets for choosing Neato over Plawecki (currently at a disconcerting .151 / .250 / .302 // .552 with Cleveland) and d'Arnaud (currently at a Micronesian .102 / .170 / .102 // .272 combined from his appearances with the Mets, Dodgers and Rays).

Funky Fakt: Nido now has two homers, but zero walks.

Listened to the first half on my deck and watched the 2nd half while cooking, eating and then cleaning up after dinner. Good stuff there.

It's more like the catcher game.

- 7 hits by the entire team, 4 of them by the two catchers [3 Ramos, 1 Nido] including all 3 XBHs and 1 of the 3 walks

- 3 HRs in the game, all by the catchers [2, 1]

- 5 RBI, all by the catchers [4,1] and 3 of the 5 runs scored [2,1]

Then toss in 13 innings of squatting [11, 2] plus a key pick-off by Ramos and the backstops were pretty much the backbone all day

When I was a kid, the older fans used to say that when a game goes long into extra innings, look for a catcher to get a hit to win it. I have absolutely no statistical evidence to back that up, but it sure makes sense.

And when they pinch-ran for the torpid starting catcher with the potential winning run, the pinch-runner didn't score, despite two hits behind him.

What bothers me isn't how it played out so much--which of course was dumb and counterproductive-- but how the whole thing was approached. Like everything with the Mets it's all a big show of solving last year's problems this year and it's almost never about solving today's problem today.

Here's Mickey in March:

"We didn't have Diaz last year. We didn't have a guy that did that. The way he went about his business last year and was probably the best closer in baseball, to take him out of that role would be tough. He knows he's got the ninth. He's going to go out there and pitch well in the ninth for us. He knows what to expect going in."

Now here he is earlier this week:

“[The eighth inning] hasn't been handled, so we have to adjust. I think the last two games, there could have been arguments where it would have been nice to be able to have Diaz come in and get an out in the eighth. It might have made it a little easier.”

Why make yourself look like an idiot unless it was all about demonstrating how inadequate last year's team was? NOBODY CARES.

Re: IGT 05/25 - DET at NYM

The Mick is engaged in so much over-thinking.

"He knows he's got the ninth. He's going to go out there and pitch well in the ninth for us. He knows what to expect going in."

This is such fatuous nonsense. Does he come into the eighth with the tying run on and get disoriented? Is he unsure of whether or not to pitch well?

Did bringing Font into a tie game in the ninth make sense because, somehow, Font knows more than others what to expect going in.

You have a tie game going into the ninth. Your job, as manager, is to stretch your best available pitcher as long as you can. It's not that hard.
