I think I'll vote for MANE MAN when the time comes in November.

Newsday.

I like the image the Post used, but the cover is otherwise too busy. I don't like the hair blocking Noah's eye in the News' shot.

Newsday has the best headline, but the picture is awkward.

The Post has the best picture, but the cover is cluttered. No need for the insert.

The News has the best overall cover.

I like how we've become automatically conditioned to compare covers and choose a preference.

Post's hed told the story best. Newsday, as usual, is indirect. News's pun was secondary to historic performance.

Post is only one even approaching 'good'. Restore the thor makes no sense. Mane Man is dismissive (it wasn't luck) and was really lack of mane man?

At least the post captures the singular and historic nature of it.

You don't think "Restore the Thor" makes sense? I think they are noting that Syndergaard bounced back after a series of starts worthy of mere mortals.

well, 'the Thor' doesn't really make sense. sure, he bounce back, but he A. wasn't really that bad (luck!) and B. that's not really a 'restoration'. I guess it kinda rhymes because ends in 'r' but that's pretty dumb too. But like, 95% of these covers are stupid and they're the best part of these rags, so no surprise really.

Re: Straphanger Literature

I'm with Ceets on this one. Restore the Thor sounds clumsy and contrived. And besides, shouldn't it be Thor Restored if you buy into this whole restoration thing? The News is the best back page visually, but I deducted points for the lack of originality Mane Man heading. I thought the Post's copy was the best.

Re: Straphanger Literature

Both Newsday and News back pages could have appeared in 1994's The Paper as examples of what a movie thinks a tabloid back page looks like.

It's likely a play on "Restore the Roar," which is used by every sports team with a roaring animal as a mascot or nickname.

I'm not defending. Just explaining.

Re: Straphanger Literature

It's funny because to me, Newsday always seems to be the most thought out, like they had a committee with a bunch of people deciding what direction to take whereas the Snooze always come off as the work of a single clever person they trust to do it.

(It's probably just 1 or 2 in either case)

Restore the Thor is stupid. First off, it comes off as if the reader is being asked to do something. Me? What the fuck can I do? Or what am I even supposed to do? Restore Thor to what? To the roster? To the rotation? I didn't know Syndergaard was gone in the first place. Restore what -- Thor's pitching prowess? Only Thor himself can do that I suppose. Maybe it should've read Thor, Restore Yourself. Or maybe the headline's a message to Thor's pitching coach. Does Thor's pitching even need to be restored? In that case, maybe the headline should've read Thor! Restore Your Pitching Skills. Though that would imply some diminishment in pitching on Thor's part. And you can't have that because then it's not uplifiting. And you'd have to stick your head in a mayonnaise jar and cover your ears to block that negativity out. God help any newspaper that tries to cover some downturn in an honest but downliftingly fashion.

It's moronic. But it rhymes, I suppose. so there's that.

I've never heard restore the roar. Is this a college thing? It's probably confusing and dumb there too.

Both the Tigers and Lions use it here. People don't seem confused.
