It's weird. I can't be more frustrated with his play. At the same time, I didn't agree with sending JD up to pinch-hit for him in the ninth.
It should be a no-brainer. Against a lefty flamethrower, you want a righty, who if nothing else, has a demonstrated propensity to get around on high heat.
In my head, though I tend to feel that Nimmo still has something of that table-setting ability. As bad as he has been (.194 BA! Bad!), I still think of him as the best bet to get on base. Even though his OBP is down to .320 and Davis' was higher. I was thinking that he could take one off the elbow, work out a walk, or bunt one down the third-base line.
But the idea that he can do all that just means that it's that much more important to get him right. If he's been your Wally Backman — the guy you want leading off in a one-run game in the ninth — and he's becoming the guy you pinch-hit for leading off in the ninth, he's no good to you like this.
Also, it'd give a chance for Smith or Davis to see some outfield time.
