Jeff McNeil wins the Mets Heart and Hustle Award. It honors active players who "demonstrate a passion for the game of baseball and best embody the values, spirit and traditions of the game". It is voted on by MLB alumni. Every team gets one and then an overall winner is announced after the season.

The Wilson Award is the defensive version of The Cy Young Award or The Hank Aaron Award. It's for the most valuable defensive player. There are also lesser Wilson Awards for each position. While they endeavor to honor the same thing the Rawlings Gold Gloves are trying to honor, they are different in that they are decided by sabermetric formulae, whilst the GGs are voted on by players. Its pretty weird to see two rival glove companies each get sponsor a league-recognized award that is meant to honor the same thing. They originally selected one guy per league as defensive player of the year, but then they shrunk it to one guy, which is unusual, in that awards typically proliferate, rather than anti-liferate, going from one overall winner to one in each league. My shortlist of potential Met Gold Glove candidates would include (surprisingly) Alonso, as well as Matz and deGrom at pitcher. But when the numbers are crunched, I don't think any of them would be particularly close to winning.

If things go the way we want them to next week, this will be the first time the Mets ever won two of the Big Three awards in the same year, and this decade will have more of the Big Three awards than any previous decade. The list of Mets award winners is dominated by pitchers. Alonso would only be the second position player to be so honored. 1960s (2) Rookie of the Year: Seaver 1967. In all fairness to Mr. Baggarly... Mike Soroka WAS really, rilly, rully good. And you could argue-- as Baggarly does, sorta-- that Soroka's primary skill (suppressing HRs) is a rarer thing in this league/environment.

The canned statements following both Pete's and Jake's honors came exclusively from J. Wilpon and B. Van Wagenen. No managerial boilerplate, neither from the new guy spouting superlatives in anticipation of taking the wheel nor the last guy who actually did the managing. No Mgr of the Year votes in '18 or '19, but as a manager of individuals if not games, Callaway wasn't the worst.

I was thinking about this. We heard many times that Beltran will be a great manager of people. That might be true and I sure hope it is. But for all Mickey's issues, I don't think we ever heard anything about him losing the clubhouse. I don't know if the Syndergaard/Ramos sniping was aimed at Mickey, or whether those decisions were being made above and the frustration was directed there.

ESPN's Jeff Passan convened a panel of 68 media members to pick an All-MLB team -- first, second and third teams, actually -- for 2019. Pete Alonso and Jacob deGrom were near-unanimous picks for first team at first base and starting rotation, respectively. Seth Lugo made the second team bullpen.

With hindsight, the pieces were there. It just hadn't occurred to us to put them together in advance. It probably hadn't occurred to the Mets, either. By the end of the season, they were the Mets more than any Mets were. Relive the youthful exuberance here
