The Other 41 in Mets History

Is the franchise's single-season home run record on the endangered species list?

Todd Hundley, en route to 41 in 1996, hit his 14th in the Mets' 59th game.

Carlos Beltran, en route to 41 in 2006, hit his 14th in the Mets' 49th game.

Pete Alonso tonight reached 14 in the Mets' 43rd game.

Re: The Other 41 in Mets History

In 1976, Dave Kingman, on pace to hit way more than 41 HR's for most of the season until he sustained an unfortunate injury, hit his 14th HR in the Mets 30th game.

But I thought that this thread was going to be about Gordon Richardson.

Re: The Other 41 in Mets History

Kingman shouldn'ta dove. If he hadn't, Alonso would be on pace to perhaps pass Todd and Carlos for second. But he dove and finished with 37.

Which reminds me — don't dive, Pete. Not awkwardly, anyway.

If only Robinson Cano had been a Met then and modeled his version of strategically leisurely play in his role as leader by example.

I want to see Alonso break the club record for two reasons:

1. The Mets club record for homers is very low on the list, ahead of only the Royals, based on a list I found from 2017. (See below.)

2. I don't want Todd Hundley and his obviously steroid-enhanced season to continue to be the record holder. I remember how much I wanted Beltran to break that record in 2006.

The Royals record is now 38. Mike Moustakas broke Balboni's mark in 2017. Jorge Soler already has 35 for this year's Royals so Moustakas' record is in jeopardy.

Also, Marlins record is now 59. Giancarlo Stanton in 2017.

Two more observatiions:

Jimmy Foxx's 58 HR's for the Philadelphia A's in 1932 in the team HR record that's stood the longest. Also, I'm surprised at how relatively low the Rockies are on that least, even though they've only been around for 26 full seasons, given the extreme hitting environment they play in.

And Forbes Field had a 365' left field line ( a fence put up 30 feet in front of the high scoreboard that was his original target. The fence was originally put up when the Pirates got slugger Hank Greenberg and was called Greenberg Gardens until he retired, then called Kiner's Corner.) and a 406' left center power alley.

What an accomplishment!
