In The Athletic today, Ken Rosenthal writes:

Which is less likely, that the Mets would replace Mickey Callaway with an accomplished veteran manager or that such a manager — be it Joe Girardi, Dusty Baker or Buck Showalter — would be willing to enter the team's tangled, dysfunctional orbit?

...

Oh, and to answer the question posted at the top of this column: Yes, at least one out-of-work manager would take the job. At least one would want the money and responsibility. At least one would rationalize that he could “manage” the Wilpons, though sources continue to insist that Jeff, in particular, is a meddlesome presence, heavily involved in the day-to-day operation of the club.

I assume that his answer to his question means that he is aware that one of the 3 he cites would immediately say "yes".

Would you be sated with any or all of the 3? Dusty is no genius but he's been to a WS and the Nationals got worse after he was fired. Joe was seen as too controlling for the MFYs. Buck made a big mistake in the playoffs and is very, very controlling. All have had success and none are Mickey. I wonder if any would want to be involved with BVW's ego and Jeffy's meddling but Rosenthal says that at least one of them would take the job.

Don't want Dusty.

Showalter is more of a 5-year-plan kinda guy.

That leaves Girardi. Wants back in, has NYC experience, way for Mets to soften blow of embarrassment that it's come to this already, and you know that's what matters to them.

I just don't see Girardi having the patience to deal with Jeffy.

This. Girardi couldn't handle Jeffrey Loria in Miami. No way he'll be able to handle Jeffrey Wilpon.

Dusty, just......no.

Showalter, no.

What's the fascination with ex-Yankee managers? Stump Merrill wasn't available?

Re: Ken Rosenthal on the Next Guy

I suspect "the next guy" will be an interim manager from within the organization, and a full search will occur after the season ends.

Rosenthal adds Mike Scioscia and John Farrell as candidates:
