He has been smoked by Seattle, Lowrie and Familia. Well done on that burger!

Not sure? I'm absolutely positive that I don't have even half a clue.

I'm guessing BVG is BVW, and the Lowrie and Familia signings, along with the trade with Seattle, can be said to have burned Van Wagenen.

I assumed it had something to do with Mike Plawecki.

Seattle, coming off an 89-win season, is on pace for a whopping 69 victories this year.

Or maybe it's just Jay Bruce's .193 BA that's got ya down.

Bruce has a higher OPS than Cano (to go along with a positive WAR). Plus his .189 BABIP can only go up, and actually makes him a safer bet than Cano to improve his numbers going forward. He will bring back value to the Mariners, either in July or the offseason. One way or the other, we will have Cano for four and a half more seasons. That trade remains what van Wegenen will stand or fall on.

Lowrie was bad luck, at least to some degree (it's not like he had no history with injuries). But pitching was a far greater need than the infield when he was signed.

Familia is a much better pitcher than he's shown to this point, as we know. But sometimes guys try to play through an injury they were better off dealing with right away (Nimmo falls into that category too), and Familia is still finding his way back. The signing may blow up in our faces long-term, but it is a signing I would have made.

And to be fair, van Wegenen deserves some credit for bringing in guys on minor-league deals that have helped.
