Help! You're stranded on a desert island forever, and all you get is a mixtape. On that mixtape you get 1 (and only 1) of the below zany, experimental, world-beat, danceable, tearjerking or proggy Peter Gabriel solo hits or near-hits. Which will it be?

Note: You can consider the videos in making your choice but there's NO YOU TUBE on this desert island. There are monkeys to shock, and you can go swimming.

Warning: You must vote for one or get no tape at all. And die.

I've noticed something odd upon hearing recent iterations of IN YOUR EYES

The lyrics in what passes as the chorus go, starting with the repeating phrase of 'In Your Eyes':

In your eyes

The light, the heat

I am complete

I see the doorway to a thousand churches

And the resolution of all the fruitless searches

But every time I've heard it lately the middle lines of 'I see the doorway to a thousand churches' have gone missing.

I first noticed it via in-store sound systems and wrote it off to that, but I've since noticed radio stations playing the same edited version

Now certainly lyrics have been cut before. But this isn't long enough to have been done for time the way Top-40 radio used to drop entire verses if some song had the

misfortune to last more than 3 minutes. Nor does the churches line seem controversial enough to offend either church goers or the anti-religious crew.

Not a big deal, but it just seems odd since I can neither figure out why an alternate version even exists nor why it seems to be the only version currently being played.

I love “In Your Eyes,” and the live versions out there are really neat. Uplifting!

I think you left off one of his best: “Don't Give Up.”

Red Rain: I had that So album and listened to it back and forth during my 35-mile each way daily commute. That song perfectly captured my attitude toward both that commute and the job I was doing it for. In the mid 90s, I no longer was in that commute to & from hell and found I had lost my taste for pop music. My mental health required I return to my classical music roots. ... but that also might explain my jones for John Prine.

So: if I were to be stranded on a deserted island, highly unlikely, my preference would be a recording of the entire Ring Cycle, which I would listen to until the batteries ran out and then swim off toward the sun and sink with a smile.

That's the spirit of this thing.

Red Rain sort of irritated me tbh, too "Sting-y" for me. Gabriel was another 80s breakthrough I resented for breaking through. But a good singer and a creative spirit. I don't know what got into me but I streamed his solo stuff all week. I kinda like DIY because it isn't so over the top.

I never liked Sting at all (or The Police) and don't get a "Sting" vibe off any of Gabriel. If I ever knew DYI, I've forgotten it (have now sampled it and am certain I've never heard it). I did not pick In Your Eyes due to the lyrics although I did like the throbbing tone of it. That was my one Gabriel CD because, as I said, I soured on "pop" music.

Are your polls/themes always this strict? Because if so, in honor of full disclosure, I tend to color outside the lines.

Sometimes the most interesting votes come from the non-aficionados.

Regarding DIY, he was really over-the-top in that period though. He pretty much invented the crowd surf — whupping the crowd into an ecstatic frenzy during "I Have the Touch" (not listed!) and dropping among them and continuing to sing on his back as he was passed around like an offering.

The "Desert Island Mix Tape" goes back a decade or more. I invented it with the harsh rules for 2 reasons: 1) to force us to consider artists we might not prefer to and 2) to poke fun at how boring and self indulgent the Desert Island Discs lists they used to publish in Tower Records magazines. Being stranded should be difficult!

(What these threads aren't for btw are unfunny jokes from non participants who prefer pissing on the thread than shutting tfu. So I totally appreciate the discussion).

I didn't know sledgehammer was MTV s most played video but that's not surprising. I encountered Gabriel for the first time on Friday Night Videos and the STM video.

You function like a dummy with a new ventriloquist. Can't you say anything for yourself? Hanging like a thriller on the final twist, but you know you're getting stuck on the shelf. Come up to me with your "What did you say", and I'll tell you, straight in the eye...

My first time in London was 1988. In pre-internet days, you were never quite sure where you were when traveling in a foreign country, and I remember waiting for a night bus on Lordship Lane at around 1am, wondering if I was going to find my way back to the hostel in Tottenham, and looking behind me and seeing this huge hardware store with "DIY" in bright red letters. I'd never known until then that hardware stores were called DIY stores in England; I just figured it was some acronym Peter Gabriel made up himself. And I had a "DIY" earworm for the next three days.

I voted for it by a hair's breadth over "Solsbury Hill", which is kind of the quintessential acoustic/proggy song and what I think of as his biggest hit in terms of airplay. I'm surprised it hasn't gotten any votes yet.

Re: That Voice Again: Desert Island Mix Tape, Rated PG

While I didn't Know that SLEDGEHAMMER was the all-time leader in M[CROSSOUT]LB[/CROSSOUT]TV, it doesn't surprise me although I always thought of SHOCK THE MONKEY as more a creature of that station.

MTV liked Gabriel because he'd dress weird and look weird in videos and that was considered somehow better than "boring" videos where singers simply sang their songs.

I would have probably voted for IN YOUR EYES if not for the fact that that seems to be the one PG song I ever hear now (well, SOLSBURY HILL too) and the lyrics oddity I mentioned before, so I'll put in a vote for

GAMES WITHOUT FRONTIERS which he also recorded in German which is appropriate seeing as how the English version of the song includes French phrasing and he often sang with Senegalese artists.

Honestly, I'd probably go with "Sledgehammer," because it's catchy as fuck for a reason, but I picked "Games Without Frontiers," which was one of my go-to "classic cut" tracks in my college radio days.

I associate Sting, Gabriel and Paul Simon as guys who left group projects to explore "world music" as solo artists. Gabriel connected tribal rhythms to electronics, Paul Simon made the connection to American roots music; Sting made the connection to Sting.

Fun fact: Gabriel is a frustrated former drummer, and though he's long removed from that discipline, he has a history of intimidating drummers with his overbearingness. One signature that goes through his work is that you almost never hear cymbals and even less high-hat.

For "Red Rain," producer Daniel Lanois pushed him in the opposite direction. I guess thinking that cymbal percussion is evocative of rain, he convinced Gabriel to fill the song with high-hat. That's why they have Stewart Copeland guesting but playing only the high-hat. The original percussion track was done and drummer gone when Lanois finally won the argument.

The album was made in a country studio in Bath that supposedly had a multitude of other professional-quality studios, so it was easy to send out for a star, because he or she might be just down the road.

These are fun facts! I had not noticed that but it does explain my preferences regarding Gabriel's stuff. One of the reasons Red Rain gets under my skin (in a good way) is the brightness of the cymbals/high-hat carrying it. Not being a musician at all, I never really get into why I like something, only when I don't like something.

Given its time frame and refrain, "Sledgehammer" strikes me as the 1986 Mets incarnate. "Solsbury Hill" is the wistfulness of Closing Day. I'm going to be thinking about baseball a lot on this island probably. I could probably use something for which I have created a cheerful context, which is to say "Sledgehammer".

Re: That Voice Again: Desert Island Mix Tape, Rated PG

There's certainly something nice on a desert island to have a song about being taken home. But "Solsbury Hill" stands beside perhaps only "Under Pressure" as M*A*S*H*-era songs that could be overplayed to the nth degree and I still wouldn't grow tired of them. They're super-10s.

My friend Claire used to tell me about her summers in Ireland in the seventies, when there were only a handful of radio stations, so whatever the top songs were, it would be the soundtrack everywhere and insinuate itself into every mind. Rather than drive everybody crazy like "Puberty Love," though, it pulled everybody together, and you could go see your 90-year granny and she'd be singing "Grab yer t'ings, dey've coom to take you hoom!"

Plus "SH" reminds me of the Beatles concert on Solsbury Plain in HELP! and the best film trailer ever.
