The Soccer Ball Thread

Didn't see the old one, maybe archived?

TransMonk! I wanted to ask if you're a supporter of Forward Madison FC? I saw parts of their US Open Cup match against El Paso, even though Madison is a lower-league team, they throttled El Paso in Texas. It was awesome. DO YOU HAVE YOUR PINK FLAMINGO JERSEY???

Re: The Soccer Ball Thread

I had started the most recent 'Soccer 2019' thread just prior to the change to this new forum.

It had all of about three posts at the time, mostly MetIrish and I talking the (then) recent coaching change for Man-U

He's not around too much these days but, as a MU fan, I wondered how he viewed the season long chase between rivals Man-City and Liverpool

In recent news, FIFA has gone back on their plans to expand the field to 48 teams for the 2022 WC

Not sure what that means for the 2026 Cup when it returns to North America

Re: The Soccer Ball Thread

Yeah, I guess not a ton of action in these soccer ball threads. I've gotten super hyped on the US Open Cup, America's mini version of the English FA Cup, where amateur and pub teams can get hot and end up playing the biggest fish in the country. The tourney's actually 106 years old and this year features 84 teams, it's wonderful!

Amateur teams duke it out with lower league teams, and advance to play bigger squads in the USL Leagues One and Two, then up against the USL Championship clubs (home to 36 teams including my beloved New Mexico United) and then eventually, MLS teams (another 24 teams). The winner of the USOC advances to the CONCACAF Champions League (the best of North and Central America). The winner of that goes on to the FIFA Club World Cup. So theoretically, a little minnow from the USL could ride a miracle and end up facing Barcelona in the Club World Cup.

Last night, the last 2 amateur teams alive played USL Championship sides and goddammit if Orange County FC of the 4th tier National Premier Soccer League didn't go to Las Vegas and pop their USLC hosts last night 5-3 to advance it to the round of 32. Sadly, TransMonk's USL League One Madison team got the boot.

My homeboys won their match advancing to the round of 32, where we drew an away match with MLS cellar-dwellers Colorado Rapids. It's such a cool opportunity and great exposure to play a team a level up. Gonna road trip that one for sure.

I've been to US Open Cup games, most recently to see the New England Revolution lose to the 3rd division Charlotte Independence at a tiny soccer stadium at Harvard. It has a fun vibe of a big event in an intimate venue.

Re: The Soccer Ball Thread

Yeah there were a few home USL teams not playing in their home stadiums yesterday. I'm guessing the Open Cup might have overlapped with whatever minor league baseball stadium most of these teams play in, so they just went to the local university park instead. I just called out sick 2 weeks ahead to drive to Denver for our date with the MLS Rapids. I can't wait.

Re: The Soccer Ball Thread

The Revolution actually was the home team. They have a tradition of playing early round Open Cup games in a smaller venue in Boston or Providence as opposed to Foxborough. I think DC United does something like that as well.

France scores the first goal in the opening game versus South Korea of the 2019 Women's World Cup.

France clobbers South Korea, 4-0.

Re: The Soccer Ball Thread

South Korea's not a bad team, by all reports. They've got midfield talent to burn, and their line leader Ji is a stud for Chelsea, and Chelsea's women are better than Chelsea's men (related note: expect big things from England).

Put another way: France is nasty, and comes in waves. Assuming everything goes as plotted, this will be a TOUGH match for the US in the QFs (in Paris, no less).

Re: The Soccer Ball Thread

So the Women's World Cup final is sked for July 7th ... which turns out to be the Same Day that CONCACAF picked for their 'Gold Cup' final (in Chicago) and that CONMEBOL chose for their

'Copa America' final (in Rio d J).

Now the conflicts are saved somewhat by differing times: 11AM (EDT) from Paris; 4PM in Brazil; 9:15 in Chicago, meaning that this could be looked at as a global 'Soccer Day'

Except that both organizations admit to failing to even realzie that they are, in effect, stealing much of the spotlight from the women's half of the game even though those

orgs are supposedly committed to supporting it. iow, they didn't even stop to consider that the freaking WWC was being played that month and that the 7/7/19 final date

was set last September.

Needless to say, the women aren't too happy about being either ignored or big-footed (or both) but there are already too many plans in place to change anything.

The US Women practiced today against what I can only assume was an empty net or High School JV squad, scoring 13 times

Re: The Soccer Ball Thread

Another cupset for our USL expansion boys New Mexico United. 4 Open Cup matches, all on the road, the last two against MLS teams. They beat Colorado Rapids in extra time last week (I made the trek for that one - what a party, I'm in the mob in the vid below), and they soundly beat FC Dallas 2-1 last night. On to the semifinals for another road match, this time against MLS side Minnesota United. I'll already be on vacation for that date, otherwise I'd get a flight and my gf would dump me for being a soccer-obsessed weirdo maniac.

Re: The Soccer Ball Thread

After they resisted the influx of technology for a number of years, I had no idea how deep down the rabbit hole international soccer has suddenly gone via their VAR (Video Assist Referee)

In today's US/England semi-final* they used it to overturn a goal by the English side after determining that the goal scorer had been offside prior to receiving the path. Now I

already thought that offside calls are too strictly enforced so maybe I'm not the best judge here, but no one in the booth seemed to see it that way either and it's stunning to

me that they would essentially flip a game (it would have tied the game at ~ the 70th minute if allowed to stand) based on such a minute reading of the replay. Later, with

maybe ten minutes to go in a one goal game, a penalty kick was awarded to England based on a review of contact in the box. That call was also flipped -- from 'no foul' to

foul + yellow card + penalty kick. If I actually believed in karma I'd say that the fact that England missed the PK was proof that they've crossed a bridge too far with this

stuff, but the more logical explanation is probably just that England missing PKs is what England does and VAR doesn't change that.

* 2-1 US is your final for anyone avoiding spoilers. Plays the winner of Sweden/Netherlands on Sunday

And man did Alex Morgan got beat up out there today. I might just have to jump a quick flight and volunteer to give her a complete body massage.

You don't think she'll want to see anything like credentials beforehand from someone she's never met, do you?

My psuedo-niece is on the NYPD soccer team (club, whatever it's called) and

was planning to be marching tomorrow in the parade.

Until this morning...

Bill de Blasio chimed in, and put the kibosh on it. Total douche, again.

They literally have one roll to share among around 30 people. Dire times, man!
