I dunno, maybe I should wait until the first inning starts?

NYM (27‑27) Noah Syndergaard (RHP, 3-4, 4.93)

LAD (36‑19) Walker Buehler (RHP, 5-1, 3.58)

Re: IGT 05/29 - Mets @ Dodgers

Syndergaard's starting to remind me a little bit of Nolan Ryan. Thor's not struggling as much as Ryan did early in his career but I'm starting to wonder if Syndergaard's ever gonna have that dominant unhittable season or seasons that everyone was sure he would've had already, and if he ever does have those seasons, whether they'll happen in a Mets uniform.

Re: IGT 05/29 - Mets @ Dodgers

Would have been nice if Hecchavarria had still been on base to score via Syndergaard's hit.

Not sure that his 'suicide run' towards 3rd was necessary, particularly with only one out, but I suppose that after Monday night's running debacles, he just wanted to make sure.

Re: IGT 05/29 - Mets @ Dodgers

This game is like a blueprint for Noah's whole season: pitches get fouled off forever, but not swung through, until one finally goes fair and finds a hole somewhere.

And then if there are runners on the whole situation gets even worse.

It's obvious that he's missing that killer slider but there also seems to be a degree of bad luck involved. Aside from the pop-ups/high-flies tonight, I think every ball they've hit

tonight (except for maybe one right at Conforto) has found some grass and whether those balls are hit hard or not seems irrelevant.

Homers with topspin are always a sign that something may be amiss.

Those terrible first months of seemingly every season that Curtis Granderson had as a Met were filled with balls he struck the hell out of, but they were on low pitches that he didn't quite get under, and so the topspin would bite at the end of their flight, and they'd die on the edge of the warning track.

Mark McGwire's record-setting 62nd homer was on a topspin drive that took about a second and a half to get out. It seemed to travel 100 feet further than it should have.

Re: IGT 05/29 - Mets @ Dodgers

We gave up our top prospect to get a 36 year old who missed a nice chunk of last season. Guys that age who miss that much of the last season fare dreadfully historically. They don't bounce back as easy as a 28 year old. Plus we know he's gonna decline which he might be doing right now, just weeks into his contract. All because the Mets were too cheap to sign Machado, a top tier FA. With a hole at 3B and with McNeil, who showed he could play second. But the NY NL team isn't allowed to go after baseball's best players.

Well, the butcher's bill may already be due on Cano. You get what you pay for. Or dont pay for because the Mets gave away top prospects for Cano. Because they're cheap. And slimy enough to include Wright and Cespedes's contract when asked about their total payroll.

Centerfield
May 30 2019 10:32 AM
Re: IGT 05/29 - Mets @ Dodgers

And not just a top prospect, but one that has glowing reviews comparing him to Mike Trout. He may or may not pan out, but that speaks to the market value he has right now. He's the type of prospect you trade only under the right circumstances. And those circumstances mean getting a game changing player back in return. Christian Yelich, Nolan Arenado. Or a Cy Young caliber starter. Certainly not a closer. No matter how good he was supposed to be.

I've said before. There are trades where you take on a shit contract. There are trades where you deal away your top prospect. If those things happen in the same trade that is one trashfuck of a trade.

He missed it. He didn't play. He didnt face live MLB pitching. He lost the rhythm of MLB play. He missed it. That's indisputable. The issue is -- does the reason why he missed it matter? TBD

A person who misses half a season because he lost a leg is probably a poorer bet to perform than a person who misse shalf a season to train and serve stateside with the Marines. A person who misses have a season because he got shot in the head is a poorer bet to perform than a person who misses half a season because of a prior commitment to play Premier League Soccer/Football.

All of this is probably true. But none of it disproves the idea that a half season lost, even if not injury related, might bring about or hasten the decline of a returning 36 year old veteran.

Re: IGT 05/29 - Mets @ Dodgers

No, you're not. And I'm not trying to prove or disprove anything. I'm just trying to work from facts and reason.

Canó was already the slowest secondbaseman in the league, and that feeds into declines in most secondary facets of his game, and we've seen that already. If that's the fact, he better be hitting like an MVP to make the trade worth it, in my book. And while he was still perfectly good 35-year-old hitter in the games he did play, an MVP he was not.

And even, then, Roberto Alomar hit like and MVP the year before he became a Met, but his first season with the Mets, he hit like a sucker. And with him too old use to defense or baserunning as weapons, he was a bench player that the Mets were using full time.

Canó could probably be a perfectly good complimentary player or part-timer, but at that salary, for those years, and looking to him to play every day, bat third, and show value until he's 41, is probably not the safest bet. There's certainly some factors on the other side of the equation, but not enough to make me celebrate that deal.
