Meanwhile in Atlanta, JT Realmuto just banked a liner off pitcher Sean Newcomb's head. And not a glancing blow either as the carom took the ball high over the 3rd base dugout and off the netting there. Seemed to come out of it unhurt but was immediately removed anyway. 1-0 Braves in the 3rd as they make the pitching change. On Friday night, the Phils held several leads -- 5-1, and later 7-2 -- but wound up coughing up one in the 6th, two in the 7th, two more in the 8th, then three in the 9th to lose 9-8 So we're not the only ones with bullpen problems apparently. In Colorado, also on Friday, the Rox took a six run lead over the Padres into the 9th but allowed the Pads to tie it, and then gave up five more in the 12th Rox lead 9-3 after six, and 10-4 after seven. Final score = 16-12 in 12 innings in a 5+ hour Coors special

I don't like that this game has closed to 6-3 while the offense has gone into shut-down mode as if they're trying to just sit on the lead. Also not fond of the fact that it took just shy of two hours to get thru five innings. The ump injury had a little to do with it, but still. This Genesis Cabrera guy for StL looks pretty good ... at least in the beginning

Funny that if Molina is left in the run for himself he likely doesn't even try to score and the Cards get at least one more crack at it. Actually a pretty good outing by Diaz. Two of the three runners were an infield single and a piece o' shit bloop that fell in in front of a deep OF. Had Roasrio picked up the relay throw cleanly Thursday night, the Mets could have (should have!) won two games in this series via the tying run getting thrown out at home.

Conforto should have waved off McNeil. Of course, if he did that and still didn't catch the ball, the game is tied. The third base coach gambled on McNeil not anticipating the runner might try to score from first. Given that there were two outs and McNeil was running the opposite direction and could only guess at what was going on behind him, it was a better gamble than it wound up looking. But I'm all for heads-up defense making the other team look bad.

I don't think either Conforto or McNeil was catching that ball simply because it, like seemingly about 15 other balls the Cards hit so far this series, wound up in exactly the right/wrong (depending on POV) place.

And, yeah, it wasn't a bad gamble by the StL coach, nor was the decision to run for Molina in the first place; that's a move they simply had to make. It's just ironic that running for him essentially wound up causing

the out because there's no way you even think about sending anyone named Molina on that play. Also the Cards (like most teams these days) had a short bench and had already made three subs which led them to

use a pitcher as their PR and he didn't help matters by stumbling around 3rd and messing up his whole gait. I think HE was surprised that he was sent.



With a less-slumpy Goldschmidt on deck do they do the same thing? Don't know if the coach was thinking along those lines at the time or not.
