IGT 6/18: Tomorrow I May Go as Far as Suicide

Johnny Lunchbucket
Jun 18 2019 08:18 AM

I picked up the paper this morning

And read all the daily blues

The world is one big tragedy

I wonder what I can do

About all the pain and injustice

About all of the sorrow

We're living in a danger zone

The world could end tomorrow

But I'm not gonna let it bother me tonight

The Atlanta Rhythm Section was what their name indicated they were, a studio band based in Atlanta that among other things backed Roy Orbison. They were Southern but not Southern Rock per se, nice mellow rockin groove with their best stuff.

They are one of those workaday groups that put out 1 album a year for 10 straight years, 1972-1981. Consider this a prelude to their forthcoming Desert Island Mix Tape.

Someone on Twitter, perhaps it was Mike Puma, said that if they lose this game they can start selling for next season.

Good choice!

Mets prepping a little Champagne Jam tonight. 3 XBHs, 3 walks in 2+ innings so dar, Teheran working hard at 43 pitches

I was on the verge of borderline depression following the long(-ish) fly out by Acuna leading off the 1st then the Dansby Swanson double because, with Freddie & Donaldson coming up, I had visions of this

game falling apart almost before it started. Fortunately, that descent into madness was forestalled.

Alonso robbed of what would have been his third double/4th XBH of the game.

Settles for a single instead.

Not counting chickens here, but two of things I like about this:
[list=1]

  • [*]Disabuses the Braves of the idea that Teheran is an ace again.

  • [*]Disabuses the world of the idea that deGrom isn't.

    Oddest strategy of the day?

    - Mets pulling off a double steal with 2 out/2-strikes and the pitcher up

    - Freddie swinging 3-0 while leading off an inning (7th) down by eight

ARS was one of those groups that got thoroughly squeezed out when radio stations started tightening their playlists.

For a while there they were versatile enough to fit into several different formats but, because they weren't definitively representative of any one specific genre, they wound up getting

dropped from all of them when stations chose to "focus" on their core sound. Not that they were ever superstars to begin with, but suddenly it was like they disappeared overnight.

Gary asked Ron if the bad ninth ruin all the positive vibes of the game, and Ron said that at the moment, he probably feels like crap, but once the game gets nailed down, everybody shakes hands, and he's standing in front of his locker, he'll be on Cloud Nine.

But it was more like Cloud Four.

Re: IGT 6/18: Tomorrow I May Go as Far as Suicide

Gooden's spoken about this with regard to deGrom, saying that as magical as 1985 was, not being able to go out and just do it again led to him hating the game.

He had to come to realize despite all his work and skill development, a lot had that he couldn't control had to go right for 1985 to happen, and he had to get back to doing what everybody else in the league was doing, trying to take care of business one game at a time, one batter at a time.

deGromio is hoping for a perfect game every time out. That's fine until you give up a run or two, and you still have to get your team deep into the game. You feel like you've already failed, because you have such high expectations of yourself, and you start beating yourself when bad results come, instead of adjusting to adversity.

deGrom yielded something like a batting average of .015 with runners in scoring position last season. It felt like that, anyhow. He can pitch his ass off for 100 years and that still might not happen again.

He needs to grow his hair, play with his kids — play the flute and dance and sing his song.
