To go with the Mets' grand slam-fueled 7-3 victory over the Dodgers last night, the AAA Mets of Syracuse pulled out the heavy artillery in Buffalo last night, pounding the disloyal Bisons with a PCL-like score of 16-2. Four separate Mets went yard and everybody in starting lineup not named Tebow had at least one hit. The big star on the evening was Arismendy Alcantara — recently called up from Binghamton — who was on base all night, going 3-3 with a homerun and two walks.
Did somebody say Binghamton? An unearned run being the only mark against Harol Gonzalez in seven innings yesterday evening, and Bingo found themselves down 1-0 to Richmond going to the ninth. But a two-out RBI single by Jason Krizan plated the tying run and Andres Gimenez got the game winner in the 10th, singling home the stupid automatic baserunner.
A four-run first may have made it feel like things would be automatic for St. Lucie in their matchup against the Jupiter Hammerheads, but by the fifth, the Jupiterians had tied it at four. A two-run homer by Carlos Cortéz in the bottom of the inning, however, put the good guys on top to stay in their 8-5 victory.
Finally we visit the South Atlantic League, where Columbia is still trying to firefly their way out of last place. It's a long climb, but on this night, they were the better team, as José Butto threw six shutout innings to finally tally his first win against six losses, leading the 'Flies to a 7-4 victory, as outfielder Wagner Lagrange's grand slam (above) provided the difference. (Wagner's goal is to become baseball's greatest-ever player named for a ZZ Top song. Wartime St. Louis Brown thirdbaseman Tommy Tush has held that title for 70 years.)
It may not be the first time this has happened all season, but it's the first organizational sweep I've spotted. Five Metropolitan-affiliated squads took the field, and all five won, an occurrence that will only happen 3.125% of the time when all five teams are in action, but happened 100% of the time last night.
High-fives all around.
