The Athletic reporting the Braves have signed Dallas Keuchel to a one-year deal.

One year? I'd've thought he'd get three or so. The guy needs some security. Now he's got to go through the misery of contemporary free agency again in the Fall.

It'll be interesting to see what he has. He led the league in batters faced last year, the second time he's done that in four seasons, and he had his highest ERA since 2013. But all the rest he's had will likely help, once he gets the rust off.

For an impressively high strikeout era, he doesn't really get his share. My theory is that guys like that who nonetheless find a niche in their twenties, the league catches up with them in their 30s — Randy Jones, James Baldwin, Mark Fydrich, Mike Hampton.

Anyhow, the Mets have seemingly played everybody else in the division a million times, but they've only locked up with Atlanta four times, so we should get a front row seat. He might even be ready for the June 17-19 series the Mets have in Atlanta.

Not for nothing but Kuechel wasn't much better than Vargas last season. Not pooh-pooh ing a crafty lefty with big-game pedigree, but gotta be from Missouri on this guy. There's reasons he's taking a shitty make-good deal.

I was hoping he would sign in the Bronx, if only to be forced to shave that obnoxious beard.

Better in The Bronx than elsewhere in the NL East.

Hey, you know what's also awesome? Anthony Swarzak has made 7 appearances for the Braves to the tune of a 1.17 ERA. Man, I love the Brodie era.

Seattle could have sold higher on Swarzak and Bruce had they been more patient. But the thought of the Phillies and Braves benefiting from that deal is disconcerting.

So the Yankees were the "clear favorites" to land Keuchel, until somebody else bid on him. So when do their fans revolt at their non-existent trigger finger? When does signing DJ LeMahieu, when Machado was available, backfire? When does filling their depth charts with established AAAA players with negative career WARs like Gio Urshela blow up in their faces?

Reports now on several major sources is he didn't sign with Yanks so

he could keep the rat's nest thing he's got going on.

My feeling is that Keuchel doesn't have much left in the tank

Keuchel is getting it done so far, with a 3.09 ERA through five starts (32 innings). It may not be particularly sustainable as his strikeout rate is way down at 4.8.

Crap hitter, too.
