Dugout, or a Far Rockaway bus stop. You decide!
The Mets may not go hard enough for some in the international amateur free agent market, but they go harder than most teams, and they also go broad, stacking their two DSL teams with teen titan talent not just from the standard hotbeds of The Dominican Republic and Venezuela, but guys from The Bahamas, Honduras, Colombia, and other lesser baseball nations. And the results have been typically strong. Despite splitting their talent between two teams, they combined to go .566 in 2018 and .662 in 2017. Quality!
So, you probably won't be shocked to learn that the DSL Mets 1 are off to a gobsmacking good start again, opening the season at 4-2 and a half game off the early jockeying for position in the standings. But yesterday's game was not your typical game. In fact it was a pip — a combination of the hallowedness of professional athletes do their thing, and the wildness of Little Leaguers scratching away under the sun.
Oh, things were progeressing along like, you know, a baseball game, with the Mets down 2-1 after three, but getting single runs in the fifth and sixth, to pull ahead 3-2. That was the score when the Angels went down in order before Alvaro Figueroa in the eighth. Closer Brandon Sanchez started getting loose, readying himself to pitch the ninth with the slimmest of margins to protect.
But that didn't come to pass. In the bottom of the eighth, Nehemias Lopez entered the game for the Angels. And after he struck out his first batter, the dam done broke. Luis Castillo walked. Domenico Pascale walks. Famin Rodriguez walked. Jan Cabrera got hit by a pitch!
Another pitching change by the Angels and Cristopher Perez singled to center. A wild pitch followed. Endy Rodriguez doubled to left! So on and so forth and by the time the dust settled a slim 3-2 lead had turned into an 8-2 laugher going into the ninth. The Mets sat their closer down and sent Alvaro Figueroa (perhaps cooled down by this point) back out there to finish up.
Big mistake.
Oh, somewhere six-run leads are safe in the ninth, but not this afternoon, not in the Dominican Republic. Against (first) Figueroa, (then) José Valdez, and (finally) Yeremi Abad, the Angels opened up a reign of carnage so unsettling that frankly, it belied their name. Pushing SEVEN runs across the plate, they perhaps shocked even themselves by heading into the bottom of the ninth with a 9-8 lead.
Who needs a closer, right? I mean, it's a one-run game, but the Mets have to be so demoralized that they will just roll over, right? They just blew a six run lead!! They were suddenly losing. It's over

WRONG!
I mean, maybe the Mets just wanted to roll over and die, but the Angels wouldn't play along. Two walks, a sacrifice bunt, and a throwing error tied things up before a double play sent things to extra innings.
And now we're in the realm of the automatic runner on second. The Angels had no problem scoring him and another guy and now they had a two-run lead to protect. But a walk, a wild pitch, THREE more walks and TWO more singles for the Mets, the last of which was a walkoff single for Domenico Pascale, and the Mets went home victorious.
Don't expect every game to be this crazy, but this is DSL ball, and you can get more of it if you follow this space. It's almost not worth it to distinguish starters from relievers, because the Mets, at least at the beginning of the season, give two or so innings to the starter before rolling out the relievers one after the other. The most impressive pitchers so far, however, are the aforenamed Brandon Sanchez, who has thrown five innings, striking out four and walking one, and Ronny Rincones, who threw four scoreless in his one start, allowing no hits or walks, while striking out four. They lifted him with a perfect game and went on to lose the game. BOOOOOOOO!
Outfielder Carlos Dominguez loves the extra-base hit and that has allowed him to lead the team so far with a .357 / .526 / .643 / 1.169. I can hear what you're thinking. You're thinking that, Hey, he's got an on-base percentage 126 points above his batting average! He must be getting a LOT of walks so far!
Well, Buster, you couldn't be more wrong. In fact, in five games so far, Carlos Danger has yet to walk a single time. But he's more than made up for it by getting hit FIVE times — twice in a game, two times.
Like I said, it's DSL ball, but if you want to see a team winning regularly while wearing "METS" on the front of their jerseys, the DSL may be the place to watch.
