Jeff McNeil in History

The thread that looks back upon the real time opinions of Mets 2013 12th Round selection, Long Beach State infielder Jeff McNeil.

The Mets' 12th-round selection, Long Beach State shortstop Jeff McNeil, probably doesn't profile as a regular shortstop at the big-league level, but he does have a chance to stick as a utility player if things work his way. Although he struggled during the first two seasons of his college career, McNeil rebounded to hit .348 as a junior, suggesting that perhaps he figured something out at the plate.

McNeil, who's listed at 6-foot-1 and 165 pounds but looks shorter to me, brings above average speed to the table but hasn't used it to its full effect on the bases or on the field. Long Beach State has mostly used him at second, though he switched over to short in 2013 to fill in for an injured player and played it adequately. Despite his speed, however, his range isn't great, and he really doesn't have the arm strength to profile as a regular. His actions are smooth, his footwork is solid, and his hands are soft, providing some hope that he'll last at second. He's also seen some time in the outfield, and the positional versatility could provide him the chance to make a big league roster.

At the plate, he makes very good contact, striking out just 44 times in 581 college at-bats. His 2013 rate was an incredible 4.4%. The key is a very basic approach to the plate that mostly involves just seeing a pitch and slashing at it with his bat. He hasn't hit a homer in three college seasons, and only has 29 extra-base hits, 18 of them in 2013. He has widened his stance and lengthened his swing a little, which may account for the increased doubles production this season, but I don't expect him to drive the ball into the gaps much as a pro. He'll mostly be a slap hitter, which would benefit him if he learns to use his speed better. Unfortunately, he doesn't have a great approach at the plate, lacking patience and employing more of a “see ball, hit ball” method. It's a testament to his hand-eye coordination and simple swing that he doesn't strike out more often.

Because of his positional versatility and total lack of juice in his bat, I see him as more of a utility player prospect whose best position is second base.

A left-handed hitter, he has a slashing approach and no power, but he could be an average hitter. He's an above-average to plus runner, though his baserunning could use refinement. McNeil doesn't have flashy actions in the infield, but he makes the routine plays and is versatile enough to play either middle infield spot or the outfield, helping him profile as a utilityman. His arm is fringy and fits best at second base.

John Sickels (in 2016)

Very good glove, versatile, scrappy type, hits from left side, career .305/.375/.389 hitter. Utility projection but not impossible he could exceed that.

Those are all reasonably accurate descriptions of the (to date) final product - not an easy task with a 12th round draft pick.

As a still <1 year ML'er:

the bat-on-ball/low-K/all-fields label holds up; power flashes itself (probably not 165 lbs anymore) but is only occasional; still not a 'patient' hitter but he makes that work for him;

glove skills are all-around good but doubtful as a full-time SS (no shame in that as most amateur SS's move); speed is at least decent/good which helps turn singles into doubles, doubles into triples

The difference has been what Sickels -- with the benefit of additional minor league time -- says as his final caveat: that his hit tool has "exceed(ed) that" of a utility guy.

Jeff McNeil with a mediocre BA is a bench guy at best. Now, thru nearly 500 ML PAs, he's right at .333 with an walk rate (helped by his HBPs) of at least near average [.062 = .395 OBA]

and his XBHs pushing his SLG/IsoS to .471/.138 all of which makes him (so far) a pretty damn good leadoff hitter who'd be an everyday regular on most teams.

Sickles had three more years, but yeah.

What I like is that they see parts of the package, but can't quite see it coming together. Also, perhaps, in 2013, consistent contact ability wasn't valued as highly.

Re: Jeff McNeil in History

BA/consistent contact is maybe the toughest thing to predict too. Even with a college player, predicting that he'll keep up, much less improve upon, a high contact rate through the lower then upper minors

and finally into MLB, will probably be wrong more often than right. That JMcN had done just that through his first few years of minor league ball is what allowed Sickels to go out on a limb, so to speak, and

suggest that "it wasn't impossible" he could continue to do so and wind up surpassing a utility role.

I would guess that the number of guys who have a career .305 avg in the minors who turn it into .333 in the bigs is pretty low.

What I love about McNeil is that it doesn't matter who's on the mound. He can hit against even the tough pitchers. I feel like we haven't had that guy since Murphy and Wright.

I thought this was going to be one of those threads where McNeil is pictured

Of course he did those things. That is how great he is.

But more important, Derek Jeter didn't.
