The best record in the organization by far in 2017 belonged to The DSL Mets 2, with a gobsmacking 50-21 mark, good for a .704 winning percentage. Last year, however, they mostly treaded water, while The DSL Mets 1 team dominated. I got the feeling along the way that neither squad was considered the A or B team, but halfway through the season, they would offload the better players from the lesser squad to the team with the better record, in order to give one squad a chance to make a run, and get the best players all used to rowing together.
All of that is neither here nor there, but given that notion, I can't really say a player is promoted from one DSL team to another, but rather transferred. That said, I'm seeing a lot of the top names from the Mets' seemingly prolific IFA signing period have been assigned to the Mets 1 squad, or not yet assigned at all. (And can we please leave the digits behind and call the teams The DSL Reyes Mets and The DSL Alfonzo Mets? Or something?)
Anyhow, big bonuses or not, the DSL Mets 2 don't give nary a shit. They jumped out to a 6-2 start before dropping the last two games — 2-0 yesterwoots, and 7-2 this afternoon. They currently sit tied for second, two games behind in The Dominican Summer League San Pedro Division. They'll get it back.
Leading the pitchers (los lanzadores) has been Enmanuel Almonte — the starters anyhow. Manny to the Mountain is 21 and in his second season with the Mets in the DSL. Hopefully, that just means he's a late bloomer, because after two starts, he's rocking a 1.35 ERA, giving up only four hits in 6 2/3 innings.
But you want a younger player, right? With even more impressive stats? Perhaps a bullpenner? Well, Antonio Villalba ("Village of the Dawn") fits that bill. Tony Vil has already thrown seven innings out of the pen and burned down the mission by shutting down every game he's been in, allowing no runs and only two hits, while striking out eight. Antonio is from Caracas, is in his second year in the DSL, but unlike Almonte, he's 19. I'd tell you more about him, but I keep the rest behind a paywall, and frankly, you can't afford it.
Leading the hitters so far has been outfielder-with-a-Metly-name Omar de los Santos. "Edgy," you may ask, "how can O-Town be leading the team whilst batting 219?"
That's a good question. I'll answer it too. O-Face may only be batting .219 after going seven-for-his-first-32, but in those seven hits, he's got two doubles, two triples, and a homer. So show some respect. He's also got eight walks and two HBPs in his first 42 trips to the plate. So that .219 average still feeds a .405 OBP, a .500 slugging percentage, and a .905 OPS.
IFA all the way!! You want to be big shots? Adopt guys when they're still down here in the Dominican.
