Memories of Hector Santiago

Hector's returned to the White Sox.

As a Met, he could've been worse.

6.75 ERA and a 1.875 WHIP. He could have been worse. He could have spontaneously burst into flames on the mound, for instance.

One of these guys whose name will come up in a couple of years and everyone will have forgotten he was ever a Met.

Re: Memories of Hector Santiago

The Mets really wanted him to make the team, giving him chances against opponents' A-teams right up until the end of Spring Training, and his numbers just got worse and worse. Somebody (possibly Dave Eiland) clearly saw something that wasn't showing up in games. In the end, it pretty much never did, at least at the big league level.

Also, it was his callup that necessitated the Mets facing the grim reality of putting Jed Lowrie on the 60-Day Injured List.

Re: Memories of Hector Santiago

He was the right idea, but not exactly the caliber of pitching depth I was hoping the Mets would acquire. Loved his spring interviews. He grew up a huge Mets fan, so I started pulling for him. But he has a pretty well established track record and the Mets got about what could've been expected, I'd say. Good luck, Hector!

The first two outings were very good. The next six less so.

So yeah, he could have been worse.

Sorry a kid who grew a Mets fan in Jersey couldn't stick.

Define "everyone".

Santiago did last long enough to add to the all-time NYM World Capitals team, joining Claudell Washington, Miguel Cairo, and of course Jose Lima

Maybe there are others. Perhaps Greg (Port au) Prince knows of some?

Too bad the trade for Ed Ottawa fell through.

Hector's the second Met to put Chile on the map, having been preceded by José Santiago for two glorious midsummer weeks in 2005.
