I gave a Jet cover some props.

I think the SI photo is better, but I still like the Jet cover more overall, and would rather read that story. Also, I'm a sucker when there's a cover on a non-sports publication.

I went for Grote, but I'm all about wish fulfillment, so here you go.

Not particularly well-written, but somewhat comprehensive coverage of Willie Mays Day, and a lot of other juicy information.

In one sense, the name Mets has a special meaning for Mays:
•
M is for Money.

  •
E is for Endowment.

  •
T is for Tranquility.

  •
S is for Security.
  •
There's my entry for the next Banner Day!!

Also, they not only offer a pin-up calendar, but they teach you just enough jive to properly appreciate it.

    A CALENDAR

    You can CUDDLE!

If a cuddlesome chick (desirable female) is your bag (favorite interest), then you can have a ball (good time) all year long with 12 boss (wonderful) beauties in the privacy of your crib (house, home, pad, wherever you live).

You can turn on (get excited or thrilled) month after month every time you take a look at a different full-color pin-up.

And if you're not a selfish dude (male) and would like to treat your friends after you treat yourself, you can make them wig-out (blow their minds) by giving each this big (7 1/2"x19"), wall-size, four-color calendar of 12 of America's most right on (O.K., perfect, desirable) beauties!

Um. Are we allowed to vote for Freda? Do you think that calendar coupon would still be honored?

Are you saying that a cuddlesome chick is your bag?

I don't know what you mean. Can you provide helpful explanations in parentheses?

Since we're already off the rails, there's an interesting backstory on Freda Payne's big hit, "Band of Gold." it was actually written by the Holland-Dozier-Holland team under an assumed name because of a contract dispute with Motown.

And there's all kinds of interpretations about the lyrics, and why the husband slept in a separate room on their honeymoon and such.

On a lesser note, my wife is convinced the drummer thinks he's playing on a different song with a different pace.

One fun side, I saw 10,000 Maniacs bust into a spontaneous version of this once. They would do that type of thing a lot. Natalie would start singing something and the band would try to pick it up. I have a fun boot of them trying to play "I Never Promised You a Rose Garden" and Natalie confesses -- in song -- that she doesn't know the second verse and the band doesn't know it either but manages to get to the chorus.

Anyway. Bad cover headline on Mays. Nice story.
