I'm not as big a fan of the New Yorker covers as others. I do like this one better than the Metsa Lisa one, but I'll advocate for the ESPN cover. Very little has brought me more joy as a Mets fan than smiling Jose at his peak. Bonus points to the shade thrown at Jeter. Plus the non Mets stuff is interesting: what is wrong with the Raiders? It's 2019 and we are still waiting for an answer. Adrian Peterson's biggest hurt? That headline didn't age well.

The Jose cover is such a terrific portrait and the white background makes it look super clean despite all the cluttery type. The only flaw is the black dropshadow but that's the Mets fault not the ESPN art dept. The New Yorker illustration is quality too but it looks like deGrom's face and hair on Syndergaard's body. Maybe that was the point? Not sure on that.

Best part of both of these covers is the Mets were playoff-bound when each was published. The joy of Jose is palpable. Noah is harder to read than Mona Lisa.

White wrist bands against white jersey against a white background is a little much. Daddy needs some contrast. And he doesn't mean the contrast of those drop-shadows.

I think the white wristbands were intentional: they were going for an angelic white theme.

ESPN's lack of prescience is a real problem. Their January 1991 feature, “Vince Coleman is New York's Kinda Guy and Always Will Be,” may not have played so well in the archives.
