Steven Matz, who leads the league in home runs allowed, vs Julio Teheran, who's roughly 18-1 with a 1.45 ERA career at Citi Field.* This should end well. *Kidding. 6-3, 2.28 in 13 starts. Did you know he's been around since 2011? I would have said 2014, maybe 2015 at the earliest.

That 1st inning was just a perfect illustration of how this season's been going. Them: Off the end of the bat - finds a hole - With a runner on 1st, and then later w/1st & 3rd, they hit two would-be GiDP balls, but neither one was at a fielder We, on the other hand, hit line drives right at people with runners on and then fail to tag up. And then could-be big ABs end in bases-loaded K's (Dom) just as they did last night (McNeil) for our side. For their side last night's big bases-loaded AB (Camargo) ended in a bases-clearing double

Wayne Garrett in the booth admitting he was unhappy when he batted leadoff - because, sez Garret, he wasn't a leadoff hitter. He wasnt fast enough. Crazy talk. He was a walking machine who would've led the league in walks with at least 130 of those every year if he ever got to play day in and day out. Check out his stats.

Yeah, Garrett's eye was never fully appreciated. Hell, Garrett was never fully appreciated. I thought Acuña was going to catch that double by McNelt.

Was the booing for the third base coach not sending McNeil home? Or for Cano not driving in the run? It was a lot of booing. My sense is it was aimed at Cano.

Garrett born 30 years later would likely have been a much more appreciated player. Not just because of the later emphasis and appreciation of OBA but even legal training methods -- discouraged in his time -- would have added some meat to his skinny frame (5' 11" - 175 -- more or less my size) and I'm guessing would have made him into at least a mediocre power hitter (three highest seasons were 12, 13, and 16). A former poster here claimed he referred to him as 'Warning Track Wayne' back in the day for his propensity to not quite hit HRs. My goal, if I ever were to meet and chat with Wayne, would have been to ask him if his On-Base ability was ever a subject at contract time seeing as how those guys were on one-year deals much of the time. And, if not, if he thought it was because front offices didn't appreciate the value of that or whether they simply didn't want to pay for it. I suspect both.

Someone was appreciating Garrett's on base skills. He batted leadoff. Dave Magadan never batted leadoff. Garrett could put up top five league leading OBP numbers with batting averages in the .230s. I wonder if Garrett has the best walk rate in franchise history, maybe even better than Mags and Olerud?

So the other thing about this barrage is that it'll bring up the meat of the Atlanta lineup once again in the 9th inning. But instead, Lugo gives up 4 hits (3 for XB) while getting just 5 outs and so Freddie and co will get one more crack at things.

Our 8th inning not quite as successful as theirs: 1-2-3 against a 25 y/o rookie reliever who was an 18th round draft pick out of mighty Tabor College (Hillsboro, Kansas as if you didn't already know that)
