TWiB Notes -- July 1 thru July 7

So the closing week of the '1st Half' finds a bullpen performance that says: 'You think YOUR pen is bad?'

Rox go into the bottom of the 9th at Chavez Ravine leading the Dodgers by one.

Greg Holland gets the first two outs and then with two outs and none on ...

Walk - Walk - Walk - Game-Tying Walk [Pitching Change: in comes T.J. McFarland] - Walk-off Walk

Rosario would have swung at the first pitch to him.

Just in case this should go un-noticed, the DSL Yankees edged by the DSL Twins 2 last night, 38-2. Manfreds balls are apparently in the Dominican Republic, too.

The Yankees decided to go with only one DSL team this summer. Presumably, that gives them the edge over over the B-team of a split Twins squad, but holy shneikes. The 38 runs is believed to be a record for minor league affiliated ball.

Odd Facts:
[list]

  • [*]The Twins out-errored the Yankees, 6-0.

  • [*]Reliever Luis Velasquez came on in the sixth with a 28-2 lead, pitched the rest of the way as his team scored 10 more runs to support him, and walked off with a save.

  • [*]Yankee hides absorbed four hit-by-pitches. One guy got hit twice.

  • [*]As overwhelmingly dominating as the game was, it remains just one game, and so all it did for the Yankees was even their record at 13-13.

The Dodgers have won each of their last five home games via walk-offs

    - 6/21; 4-2 vs COL: a 2-out 2R HR by rookie Matt Beaty (~ his 60th ML AB)

    - 6/22; 5-4 vs COL: a 1-out 11th inning HR by technical rookie (cups o' joe in 2017-18) Alex Verdugo

    - 6/23; 6-3 vs COL: a 2-out 3R Pinch-Hit HR by rookie Will Smith (his 22nd ML AB)

    - 7/2; 5-4 vs ARZ: the five-walk debacle after two were out and none on, as mentioned earlier in this thread

    - 7/3; 5-4 vs ARZ: a one-out 10th inning HR by Cody Bellinger - this was after forcing extra innings with a run in the 9th

In between those two home stands they had a week-long road trip vs the same two teams and posted a 3-4 record

They start a four game stretch at home vs SDP tonight

When I heard there was a 6.something earthquake "near Los Angeles" today I got all excited.

Then, I found out it didn't strike the stadium in Chavez Ravine.

I'm still rooting for the San Andreas Fault.

    Travis d'Arnaud, American hero.

After the Yanx tied it up on an Aaron Hicks 2-out, 2-strike HR in the 9th in Tampa, d'Arnaud answered with a 2-out walk-off HR in the bottom of the 9th

About time the Rays showed up. The first two games of this series ended with Tampa losing 8-4 in 10 innings and then 8-4 in 11 innings.

One wouldn't think that was possible.

btw, if you want an explanation of the Yanx dominance in the AL East look no further than the head-to-heads

    vs BOS: 6-1

vs BAL: 10-2 (OK, that one is to be expected)

    vs TOR: 4-2

vs TBR: 9-2 (now 9-3). Are you fucking kidding me Rays?!? THIS is your attempt to be taken seriously with the big boys?

So overall that's 29-8 in division

Francisco Cervelli is done catching after his sixth concussion.

I can't say I don't support his move, but in a season that he's been hurt and hitting terribly when he hasn't been, it's going to be difficult for him to demonstrate his value at another position.

It's sort of like the barrel Eli Marrero had the Mets over back in 2006. He was done with catching, but couldn't hit enough anymore to validate his existence elsewhere.
