Brodie Telecommutes to Dugout

Callaway about as much a stooge as suspected, per Puma of the Post. PHILADELPHIA — As general manager Brodie Van Wagenen continues to insist his manager has full autonomy on game decisions for the Mets, a specific example has surfaced that indicates otherwise. According to an industry source, it was the rookie GM who instructed Mickey Callaway to remove Jacob deGrom from a game in Arizona earlier this month in which the Mets ace sustained a hip cramp. After deGrom was removed from the game in the seventh inning, the bullpen imploded in a loss that added to the frustration of a 2-5 road trip. The source said Van Wagenen, who was watching the game at home on TV, communicated with a member of the Mets support staff with an order to remove deGrom from the game. Callaway complied with the order, and deGrom was visibly upset as he departed the field, certain that he could continue pitching. The manager was grilled for the move, but at the time insisted the decision was his. “Hell, yeah, it's unusual: sending word to the dugout, telling the manager what to do?” the source said. “I have never heard of that before.” MLB rules stipulate that players and coaches cannot use cellphones anywhere during a game. The source added there was grumbling at the time within the clubhouse that Van Wagenen hadn't come forward and taken responsibility for the decision, as the perception persisted that deGrom was unhappy with a manager fighting to keep his job. I root for two teams basically. The Mets, and Syracuse basketball. Syracuse has had their ups and downs, and like the Mets, have produced exactly 1 championship during my lifetime. They've been sanctioned, and were the first #2 seed to lose in the NCAA tournament. Never, not once, have I ever questioned my fandom, asked myself why I bother rooting for them, or considered rooting for another team. I love the Mets much more than I love Syracuse. But the Wilpons make me question being a fan every day. And it just gets worse and worse.

I never agreed with the communications blackout. If you want to speed shit up, put baseball coaches in headsets like their football brethren. It's absurd that a manager can strap one on in the third inning and speak to the booth (and, by extension, untold numbers of watchers), but has to go find a landline phone to call his bullpen coach.

Don't nobody be shocked when the other shoe drops and it's revealed that Jeff Wilpon is the one making in-game demands through BVW, who in turn, relays them to Mickey. What a clusterfuck. Wanna know why Mickey sucks at managing? Because the Mets signed him, that's why. Because if Mickey was any good at managing he woulda had other options, and woulda rejected this clown show of a baseball team. Like they're ever gonna sign someone like Joe Maddon whose just dying to get browbeaten by Jeff Wilpon the first time there's a three game losing streak. They're probably still hemming and hawing over Mickey's fate even though the time to dump him just came and went. Because Mickey's got guaranteed money coming his way even though he's one of the lowest paid managers in the majors. That's another perk to managing for the NL NY franchise.

As usual, the more intriguing part of this story is: Who leaked it? An "industry source" could be anyone or anything and it doesn't even specify that it's someone from the Mets although the initial leak almost certainly had to come from someone within the Mets. That could have been passed from NYM insider to some outsider who in turn leaked it to Puma, an act which may make it hearsay which, while possibly shaky journalism, doesn't make it not true. And, again as usual, just the fact that this crew doesn't seem to be capable of keeping anything from leaking remains standard operating procedure.
