get On-BoArd with this kwiz

Frayed Knot

Inspired by a Wayne Garrett discussion during a recent IGT, your job is to list the top 10 Mets in order of their greatest walk rate as a NYM.

For purposes of this quiz, ‘Walk Rate' is defined as the simple difference between a player's career BA & OBA even though that may not quite

measure only his ‘batting eye' for a player with a large number of intentional walks and/or HBPs

Also, the answers can only come from among those in the top 30 of At Bats as a Met -- which translates into 2,200+ ABs -- so you need to

restrict your guesses to only those.

Three points for correct name

Minus one point for incorrect name

Add two bonus points for correct placement

No multiple guesses, no consecutive guesses, yadda yadda blah balh

1st place prize = Cadillac Eldorado

2nd place = Set of steak knives

3rd place = You get to go first in Double Jeopardy

And, as always, those who are late do not get fruit cup

OK. Put me down for Wayne Garrett, top tenner. Let's make him #1 all time. Why not?

Re: get On-BoArd with this kwiz

And it turns out that Wayne Garrett actually IS the winner of the Wayne Garrett inspired quiz.

With a stunning IsoW of .111 [.247 BA / .348 OBA] he is the #1 walk-drawer-rate-guy of all NYMs

Olerud, btw, is at .110 but doesn't qualify for this quiz as he barely cracks the top 50 in NYM ABs

Well, the 2,200 eliminates Rickey Henderson, the greatest walker of all time, and I'm pretty sure he would be #1 if the limit was 500 or 600 at-bats.

I'll go with Lee Mazzilli.

It had to be Garrett. Garrett's OBP's were as good as anybody's in franchise history, but he was putting up sub .250 batting averages. He had to have been a walking monster to do that.

Could be. Rickey flirted with a .400 OBA for most of 1999 until he trailed off a bit with an end of season slump. But 2000 might have clinched it for him -- his batting average fell through the floor, but his OBA remained at HOF caliber strength. Like the end of Willie Mays's career.

Re: get On-BoArd with this kwiz

Doo-Dah is indeed the second best walk-getter among all long-timey Mets, but still a long shot behind the red-headed leader.

I wonder how much/if any coach Eddie Yost had on that aspect of the game. I get the feeling that coaches did a lot less in those days

so possibly not a lot. But Yost, who in addition to STILL being the best fielding 3rd base coach I've ever seen, was known as 'The

Walking Man' during his playing career and indeed he racked up a stunning .140 isolated OB rate over his 18 year long career,

or a walk in about 17.5% of his career PA.

Usually only power hitters lurk anywhere hear that territory and Yost was no power guy [5' 10 / 170 - 139 career HR]
