I tend to think that most prospects get to skip The Appalachian League, but that's probably more impression than fact. The front page of The Kingsport Mets' website shows deGrom and Matz, so there's that. On the other hand, deGrom wasn't a big prospect until he was, and Matz, despite his first-round pedigree, had a slow and injury-laced start to his minor league career.
It's really the foreign hotshots who get to skip it, I think. The rule is roughly the high schoolers start off in the GCL, the two-year collegians with The K-Mets, and the four-year guys go straight to Brooklyn. Foreign guys make some big jumps though, between The Dominican Summer League and full season ball. But there's Gregory Guerrero, so nope.
All of which is a long way of saying you're a long way from Flushing if you're in Kingsport, Tennessee. It's been true since 1980 and it's true now. But Dwight Gooden, Darryl Strawberry, and David Wright all spent some time there. You should too.
The team spending time there right now lost this evening to the Johnson City Cardinals, 6-2, dropping them to 6-6. That wouldn't be so bad, but if they hadn't started off with a sweet 4-1 bump. They now sit a game and a half behind those same Cards in the Appalachian League West Division.
Anyhow, "Johnson City" sounds like a male strip-club megaplex.
Fun Fact: Each of the 10 Appalachian League teams shares a nickname with their parent club. No Buscuits or BabyCakes or Festering Sores or anything like that.
A guy who wants to create some fun facts of his own is Ramón Guzman. Through his first two turns in the Kingsportian rotation, Ramónmania has yet to allow an earned run. Yeah starts are particularly short at this level in the first weeks of the season, but even though it's only been eight innings so far, a trio of zeros for an ERA, along with 13 strikeouts against two walks? That's the sort of stat line that makes a man stand up and say A-men. And if they don't play "Blitzkreig Bop" for the guy's entrance music, they don't know what they're doing.
You know who knows what he's doing? Lefty reliever Christofer Dominguez knows. Tofer has thrown seven and a third innings, giving up only one run on four hits. Yeah, he's walked five to go with his seven strikeouts, but walks happen with lefty relievers. You bring them in with the go-ahead run on second in the seventh, they're going to be prone to trying to be too fine, knowing that the walk is a far less damaging outcome than a hit.
Hey, speaking of damaging outcomes, let's talk about second baseman Gregory Guerrero. He is starting to get a big head. Moving over to second likely because the team has more than a few high-end shortstop prospects, 20-year-ol Greg has turned into Johnny Bravo at the start of this season. After missing 2018 with shoulder surgery (perhaps another reason he's moved to second), Bravo has had a dynamite sound to the opening of his season, OPS-ing to the tune of 1.014, homering twice already, with a double and triple* thrown in, and walking alla time when he ain't slugging (12 walks in 10 games). Greg is out to prove just how close to Flushing Kingsport can be.
You can find out too with a trip to Hunter Wright Stadium, where Rich Donnelly's charges fight the good fight against the best the Appalachian Mountains can throw at them. Bring a copy of Rich's memoir The Chicken Runs at Midnight, and get an inscription.
* Because when Mariano Duncan is your hitting coach, you're gonna learn to hit a triple.

My adoptee Andres Regnault is splitting time with two other highly regarded catching prospects. Rich Donnelly has been playing my kid at first base and (gasp) DH.
This is the first minor league box score I check each morning.

I haven't had the pleasure of viewing a game in Kingsport, but I did stop at the field during a food break traveling down I-81 one spring. Metal bleachers for about 1,000 and a four-person press box. Pretty much what you'd expect tucked behind a Wal-Mart, Lowe's and Sonic. A friend is a scout in the A's organization and he calls it the Weeder League; if they can't weed you out of the system at this level, you might have a chance.
I'm all in on the side-armed throwing, rec-spec wearing Josh Hejka.

Yeah, that stadium is a lightning storm's fantasy.
I went to one game there and was interrupted by a thunderstorm. Many of us huddled under the roof of a covered cinderblock walkway at the entrance. Two of the top-slugging K-Mets (neither of them did much at any higher levels — Tyler Davidson was one) came out to sign autographs under the bleachers and a posse of boys lined up to meet the demigods, before manager Mookie Wilson popped out of the clubhouse, tapped the players on the shoulder, and said, "Guys, you know how electricity works, right?"

I've been reading a little about Kingsport, and there's not much I'm impressed by. Naming a city in honor of a king after The Revolutionary War? BAD! Confederate victory during The Civil War? BOOO! Holding a public execution of an elephant? What the FUCK is wrong with you people?
It is the hometown of Steven Williams, the actor who played the angry, grudge-holding, squad-car-wrecking cop in The Blues Brothers, and despite his reputation for property damage, eventually made captain and commanded his own squad of youthful detectives in 21 Jump Street. That's not nothing, but I garner that if Kingsport is truly going to know glory, it's going to have to be the Mets that lead them there, which makes yesterday's 8-6 victory over The Princeton Rays all the more meaningful.
The victory, coming on the heels of an 11-1 battering of those same Rays, allowed the K-Mets to take the best-of-three series from the Tampa affiliate, raising their record to 10-12, and holding the team's position of fourth-place (in the five-team Appalachian League West Division, just a half game behind The Bristol Pirates.
Glory would not be so elusive a quality if everybody put the heart into their pitching that Cesar Loaiza has been showing of late. Giving up but one run in each of his last three turns in the rotation, I'm-Loaiza-Baby-So-Why-Don't-You-Kill-Me has a 2.25 ERA over those three starts. Overall, he's struck out 19 and walked five in his 16 2/3 innings, and all his fans in The Cesarian Section will let you know that that sort of slinging gets things done.
They'll also remind you that he was a fucking comet last year in his destruction of the Dominican Summer League.
But those are short starts he's getting. The kid gloves policy even prospers in The Appalachian League, and therefore, you're going to need some top-shelf performers in your bullpen, and none sits on higher shelf than goofy-looking sidewinder Josh Hejka. Hedge-Fund has appeared in six haves and allowed no runs in 3 2/3 inning. I don't know about you, but that sounds to me like a guy being groomed to be a righthanded specialist, and his .143 batting average against suggests he's got it in him.
But I hear what you're saying. Here in my kitchen, I can hear you. You're saying, "All of this means bupkis if the team isn't pushing runs across the plate."
Well, I've spoken to the Tennessee State Police, and they tell me the biggest pusher in Kingsport is Andres Regnault Despite splitting time behind the plate with Wlifred Astudillo, the burly Venezuelan catcher has emerged as the team's offensive leader, slashing in at .333 / .373 / .563 // .935 through 51 plate appearances. Sure, 51 trips isn't the biggest sample, but this comes off a similarly sizzling DSL season last year, so maybe he's for real.
There's only one way to find out who is for real and who isn't — COME ON DOWN to the ballkpark tonight for the Battle for Third Place as the K-Mets send the above-mentioned Cesar Loaiza to the mound against the invading Bristol Pirates. Every Friday home games is Fireworks Night at Hunter Wright Stadium, so if you're into accidental forest fires, this could be your lucky night!
