TWiB Notes -- Aug 12-18

Only six of the 16 games played on Tuesday (there was one DH) managed to clock in at under 3 hours

Of the ten that ran longer than 3:00 all ten ran north of 3:10 and there were the same number of games (6) that took over 3:30 as there were under 3:00

One game went extra innings (10) but six others had the home team winning after 8-1/2

And while there were some high scoring games on the night, the overall average of RS/G (9.44) was slightly under the season average (9.68)

Full slate:

2:21, 2:38, 2:38, 2:45, 2:48, 2:54

3:16, 3:17, 3:18, 3:22,

3:32, 3:42, 3:44, 3:46, 3:47, 4:07 (10)

Well, at least the Yanx can't fatten up on the Orioles for the remainder of the season.

By winning this afternoon they close out the season series 17-2 including the last 16 straight.

The two they lost were both in the first series of the year; after losing opening day, the Orioles won game #s 2 & 3

Run aggregate winds up at 151 to 83 and the Yanx hit 61 HRs this season just vs Baltimore.

So Manfred is doing a helluva job on his goal to speed up the games. He might also want to look at competitive balance as some teams clearly don't care about winning so they can get high draft picks to keep players "under control" rather than pay for free agents while other teams don't care about making the playoffs via a "coin-flip" Wild Card game.

Re: TWiB Notes -- Aug 12-18

So, not a great night on Thursday for the Cubby bullpen either.

Up 5-0 with 1 out in the 8th they bring in something named Rowan Wick. Never heard of him; 26 y/o, twenty-some ML IP

He allows an inherited runner to score but get the final two outs of the frame, albeit with one of them thrown out trying to score the 2nd run on a hit. So it's 5-1 heading into bottom 9, Wick still in.

Wick: -- FO, E-6, Single, Infield Single. So he's not exactly being hit all over the park, but now a second run is in and on comes Pedro Strop to replace Wick (these sound like medieval weapons).

Strop: -- Another Infield Single (now 5-3) followed by a HBP. Bags are now loaded; out goes Strop and in comes newly acquired (off waiver wire) Derek Holland

Holland: -- Bryce Harper Walk-Off Grand Slam

Brewers @ Nats winds up 15-14 to the Brew Crew in 14 innings/5:40

11 HRs (4 MIL, 7 WAS), 38 Hits (18, 20), 31 K (13, 18), and 18 Walks were issued by 19 Pitchers as neither starter (Lyles, Sanchez) was around for the 5th inning

And, in a funny twist of fate, the game was both won and lost by J. Guerra (Junior, Javy). I guess the game really was an all-out war!

We somehow continue to NOT have the worst closer in the division as Sean Doolittle came in with a 3-run lead in the 9th and went: HR, 2B, HR, HR to his first four batters!!

But then even long-haired lefty Josh Hader couldn't close out the bottom of the inning and they were off to extras.

Both teams scored in the 13th, then Brews scored twice in top 14 and the Nats could only come back with one as pitcher Joe Ross K'd with 2-on/2-out while pinch-hitting for pitcher Javy Guerra

In the rest of the WC race: Cubs won, Braves beat Dodgers, Reds over Cards (or are we calling them the Cads now?), Phils lost, Giants won but beat the DBacks in the process.

So it's:

WAS +1.5

Cubs --- (who are technically in 2nd place by percentage points to StL)

Brewers -1.0

Phils -1.0

Mets -2.0

Giants -2.5

Oh, and the Yanx went #Savagemode again yesterday, getting three guys tossed out of the game over a borderline strike three call in the 6th inning of a game they were winning (and won).

Boone, Gardner, and Sabathia (who wasn't even playing) were tossed by multiple umpires. YES announcers thought it was all a disgrace. I believe it was Gardner's 78th ejection this season

although I'll have to double-check the records to be sure.

That punk Gardner is the front-runner for the MFY's "Paul O'Neill Red Ass of the Year" award.

And O'Neill, of course, was one of the YES Yappers complaining that the umps were the ones on the lookout for a fight.

Which, btw, they very well may have been doing just that. But it's just the attitude in the Bronx where, because Yanqui hitters are such "savages" at the plate (Boone's description) all

borderline calls that don't go the Yanquis' way means that the umps, not the players, are by definition the ones who are wrong. Gardner, who wasn't even the guy called out on the pitch,

nevertheless went childishly banging on the dugout roof with a bat afterward which got him tossed by the 1st base ump who, prior to that, wasn't even involved in the argument.

Re: TWiB Notes -- Aug 12-18

Lots of injury news this week.

In the division, David Robertson, who has barely pitched most of the year anyway, has NOW just had Tommy John surgery knocking him out for the remainder of this year and next. He'll turn

36 y/o by opening week 2021 so it's possible that his career is essentially over right now. Also, Jake Arrieta needs bone spurs removed from his elbow meaning that his 2019 season is done.

Elsewhere, Chis Sale of the BoSox in IL'd with 'elbow inflammation' and has an appointment with Dr. James Andrews. Only about a zillion dollars still owed to him thru 2025

And concerning Pete Alosnso for ROY news, Fernando Tatis Jr [.317/.379/.590] has been dealing with a 'back issue' and now is expected to miss the remainder of the season.
