Mets to Begin Title Defense Early

What title I'm not yet sure, but whatever we call them in 2019, they'll be trying to exceed it or match it starting March 26, 2020.

Re: Mets to Begin Title Defense Early

In a switch, the Mets will play on July 4 (because it's a Saturday) but not on Memorial Day (May 25).

They could have played SF and Oakland back-to-back but that would have made sense.

Re: Mets to Begin Title Defense Early

Scheduling Oakland and San Francisco games at the same time is unlikely to work out. Same reason that NL teams who have the Yankees on their schedule do not commonly play both teams in a row.

There are some dumb things on this schedule:

-a 7 game SF/SD roadtrip, followed by those exact same 2 teams coming to NY for 7 games.

-In June, there's a one-city road trip to Chicago, followed by a 3 game homestand, followed by a west coast roadtrip.

Back-to-back series in the same vicinity have happened. In fact, it's happened in NY (SFG played the Mets and MFYs) and it's happened in Chicago.

So close to baseball on my birthday. One day. Push that season earlier! next year maybe?

Re: Mets to Begin Title Defense Early

I know it has, but it's uncommon.

I'd also imagine it is more likely to happen when one series is a division matchup (eg. Reds play Cubs and White Sox at same time).

Indians play at Citi and YS back to back in a few weeks.

5 home games by April 1. That's the major stoopidass thing on the schedule.

Who's even going to go to them?

Re: Mets to Begin Title Defense Early

Strength of schedule is not talked about in baseball but the Mets get the MFYs (per usual) 4 times and HOU 4 times while WSH gets 4 with SEA and their usual 4 with BAL.

From the message board at the 506.com

[BLOCKQUOTE]NL East vs AL West

Atlanta = 2H/2A Boston, 2H/2A Oakland, vs Houston, vs LA Angels, at Seattle, at Texas

Miami = 2H/2A Tampa Bay, 2H/2A LA Angels, vs Seattle, vs Texas, at Houston, at Oakland

NY Mets = 2H/2A NY Yankees, 2H/2A Houston, vs Seattle, vs Texas, at LA Angels, at Oakland

Philadelphia = 2H/2A Toronto, 2H/2A Texas, vs LA Angels, vs Oakland, at Houston, at Seattle

Washington = 2H/2A Baltimore, 2H/2A Seattle, vs Houston, vs Oakland, at LA Angels, at Texas[/BLOCKQUOTE]

My birthday is April 3, and for a while there Opening Day was falling on the day or close to it -- and I sat through some cold, wet openers in the late 1980s. But now they've been playing for a week by then.

I think we're long overdue for a change there; we can play the MFYs every 3 years like everyone else. In fact, spreading around the MFYs to other NL teams would probably be welcome by those owners as they are a top road draw. But my guess is that the permanent rivalries in other places also boost attendance as they do in NY* and accordingly aren't going anywhere.

*Except, perhaps, the MIA/TB series.

Zeroing in on that early June 4-game set in DC. Hope they're not 20 games out by then.

Oh I could easily see the Nats being 25 games out by then.

They're idiots, and there's hardly any of them. It's been scientifically proven* that CitiField in April is at least 25% colder than anywhere in the city of New York at the same moment. Non-opening day early season attendance is awful because of it.

Besides all that, September is probably the best weather-month in NYC* and they're quitting a week early on it.

Re: Mets to Begin Title Defense Early

At least those first three are all going to be day games so that'll mitigate the weather a little bit.

Of course the remaining 13 April home games will likely include at least 10 night games including the fucking Saturday so they'll deserve

all the stoopidass lack of attendance those games will generate.

I haven't checked out what the other teams' schedules are like, but do the Yanx get to play the Orioles 45 times again next year too?

They should play Sunday Night exhibitions in the offseason, regulation games on Sunday afternoons.

We always use the formula of 'lowest temperature predicted overnight' minus 20 degrees, and dress accordingly. Does this mean down jackets in May? Why, yes it does.

Re: Mets to Begin Title Defense Early

Maybe they won't regret the contract. Maybe the richest baseball owners have so much goddamn money, more than ever, that maybe they're not running their teams with such a rigid eye on the balance sheet. Maybe some of them just want to win at all costs. Meanwhile, some people here are contorting themselves into triple pretzels trying to convince everybody, against all logic that Jeff Wilpon is either a competent owner or that he doesn't matter to the Mets fate and that Steven Cohen doesn't really want to take over the Mets.

March/April formula:

1) Come to Flushing 90 minutes before game time

2) Have pork broth/soup dumplings in Flushing before the game from any one of a dozen SUPERLATIVE locations within 10 minutes walk of the stadium

3) Be warm through the 4th

4) Have, like, some fries or something afterward

They're home for the Braves on my birthday. Maybe I secondary-market it.
