Where ya gonna go?

Double Switch
Jul 15 2019 06:03 PM

Where you gonna go when 2nd-generation US citizen Trump demands you "go home"? I'm only 3rd generation and cannot figure out which among the nations Ancestry.com says are my genetic heritage to choose when the time comes - I have never visited any of them. Good thing I don't have a Twitter account to draw attention to myself and get targeted as an "America hater" because I don't agree with him and hate everything he stands for.

I'm begging Germany to take him and his Drumpfers back, no apologies necessary. And he can take along those "many people" who agree with him, residing in his spirochete-infested skull, if Germany can tolerate his baggage. Germany has way more experience dealing with this type of person than we do. Deutsche Bank should step up.

Every Friday I wonder how it can get worse and Lo! every Monday it gets worse. Trump apologists must be having a banner day today. How many are left that don't already live in his head?

After considering, I realize I have the opportunity to become a one-percenter. Ancestry discovered I am 1% Finnish. I am thrilled, tickled, and quite proud of that. I will happily go to Finland.

... besides, it's a shorter trip than running off to New Zealand, which has intrigued me mightily.

Trump's doing exactly what he wants to do here. He loves fighting with people, and his mouth-breathing fans eat it up. He's also casting AOC and her friends as the face of the Democratic party, with all that entails. You'll be hearing the word 'socialist' a lot in the next 16 months.

And then I'd go cruising for chicks with Tampa Bay First Baseman Ji Man Choi.

How many generations are you removed from Korea? Were your parents born there? I'm in the third generation that was born in America. I don't know if that makes me third-generation or fourth-generation. (Are the immigrants the first generation or does that describe the children of the immigrants?)

I'd call that third generation, as if the word 'born' is implied even if not stated.

So the immigrants give way to the first [born] generation of Americans, who then beget second gens, etc.

Not sure if that's the officially official way of stating it, but it's what I've always gone with.

I'm zero generations removed from Korea. Born in Seoul, lived in Pusan as a baby, moved to the States when I turned 3. I don't have a lot of memories of Korea, but I do remember a time when I didn't live in the United States. My brother, on the other hand, was born in Syracuse.

I think these generation definitions are kinda vague. My parents (born and raised in Korea, immigrated to the US as young adults) are commonly referred to as first generation. People like me (born in Korea, raised in the US) are called 1.5 gen. My brother would be second generation. Which doesn't make a lot of sense, since we should be the same generation.

So keeping in line, my kids would be second generation Korean Americans, while his kids would be third generation Korean Americans. Which again, doesn't really make sense since they are the same generation. Also his kids will be half Korean, half Scottish/Italian. So I'm not sure what that does for the "generations" label.

Re: Where ya gonna go?

I don't know where/when we first started tracking this. Generations (outside of the genealogical definition) seem like they were mostly defined as a way for people to elaborate on "Kids these days!". If you told me "Second generation American" was actually just a subtly racist/anti-immigrant thing, I wouldn't be surprised.

Re: Where ya gonna go?

I've always understood the general guideline to be that if all four of your grandparents were born in the US, then you're probably more likely to identify completely as an American as opposed to (as I was, growing up) Italian or Irish. The rationale being, I'd assumed, was that you had some semblance of tradition/culture/food/etc. from "the old country" growing up. We did, to a certain extent.

Our kids are decidedly American; it's all they know. I mean, they understand that their heritage traces back primarily to Europe, but they're not attached to it in any specific way.

I do also, of course, understand that my experience is more distinctly white.

Exactly. The list of countries in which my family once lived and from which they had to flee is long and distinguished. On my father's side is Austria (my last name is a town there), Romania, and they moved here from France. My mother's family was from Lithuania. I remember people in my neighborhood when I was a kid who had the concentration camp serial number tattoos. And I fear it is only a matter of time when Dump's followers will be wearing arm bands.

Re: Where ya gonna go?

My grandparents were all born in the United States. My great-grandparents too. And all my great-grandparents, except for a rogue Irishman from County Cork. Which makes me only slightly less of an American than Ilhan Omar, since no one in my family ever had to choose to come here. Most of them never even had the imagination to leave Texas. Not that terms like "less of an American" have any meaning, of course. This is all so stupid. And it's so obviously stupid that I feel stupid even saying anything about it.

SEND HIM BACK! SEND HIM BACK!

They are vague. Also totally meaningless except for the case in being legally able to run for President. btw, how often does your brother remind you that he could run for President while you never can?

I'd refer to your kids as 'first generation' (depending on your wife's status) but, as I said earlier, that's merely the way I learned it. Not arguing that there's an official right/wrong definition here.

It's like how one defines relations: some will refer to their cousins' kids as 'second cousins' while others go to the more cumbersome, but possibly more technically correct, 'first cousins/once removed' label.

I just call them cousins.

So keeping in line, my kids would be second generation Korean Americans, while [brother's] kids would be third generation Korean Americans. Which again, doesn't really make sense since they are the same generation. Also his kids will be half Korean, half Scottish/Italian. So I'm not sure what that does for the "generations" label.

It'll make their backgrounds mixed and variable, just like most us.

My brother's wife, like you, immigrated as a young child. So that makes their two kids either 1st or 2nd gen Americans (depending on your preferred definition) on their mom's side and yet as much as 10th to 12th on the other.
