You're on a desert island. You've got all the music you need by chance, on vinyl, in good++ condition, with some chipping on the covers. You've even got a good sound system and, somehow, a power source. Solar panels, probably.

What you don't have is a whole lot of sources for calories. You have, in fact, one source: an endless supply of rice. You expect to be stuck here at least a year. You don't get a blend of rices. You don't get some sort of super-processed rice like Rice Krispies or Rice Chex Mix. And for the sake of the exercise, we're going to categorize related grains like QUINOA as "Things that are not rice."

Stuff like YELLOW rice is cheating also, because that's just white rice with spices. If you can harvest spices on the island, crack open a coconut, or catch the odd fish, good for you, but for now, all you're guaranteed is rice, and anything else is just hard work.

I'm a basmati fan. My wife has been diving deep into Indian cooking over the past year or so. We've got a lot of basmati rice around and I like the length and texture.

Same. We've been doing a lot of basmati rice here lately as well.

Minute Rice isn't an option?

We are a Jasmine household but we keep a supply of wild rice (not actually rice) to use as topping and to put in salads.

Yeah, I should have nixed the WILD. My mistake.

No, it's close enough and most people think it is so let it stand.

Re: Rice is Nice

Basmati fan but never eat it unless doing Indian.

Cup o' jasmine cooked in a can of College Inn chicken broth has become a

regulat part of the rotation here.

Wild rice isn't rice??? I guess I'm among the uninformed masses who were unaware of that.

i..rice is. I dunno, boring. I don't have skin in this game. Just give me the most nutrient-rich one.

I like rice. I have no idea what kind of rice I eat. It's "white rice". It's probably from a very special country where all of the people are fantastic. Like... Norway.

If you added sticky rice, I'd vote for that. It's delicious, you don't need utensils, and it ferments well too.

Re: Rice is Nice

Just tried Goya brand low salt yellow rice and we liked it.

Minute rice is good, too.

Because of my medical condition (no, the other one, not the heart attack) I can't eat brown rice.

I remember the first time we went to a PF Chang's and the waiter asked what kind of rice I liked. I asked what he meant, and answered, "You know, rice". It wasn't my type of restaurant. Chinese food was my comfort food as a kid, and having to make choices about rice once I ordered stressed me out. I haven't been to a PF Chang's since then. Yuppie scum.

Re: Rice is Nice

I used to think that if you had rice on the plate, that was your "starch" for that meal. I now know better. We often have rice, potatoes, and noodles all at once with several vegetables and some meat choice of the usual sort. It took a while for me to overcome my staid upbringing and accept this but - rice is not only nice, it's essential. So bring on the stir-fry noodles and rice in equal measure.

Re PF Chang's: I have never had a meal there that was not first rate, tasty, well prepared, attractive, and the wait staff have always been top notch. My only problem with PF Chang is that the nearest one is more than 15 miles away.

oh duh, changing my answer.

I'll take the one that tastes the best fermented. You'll all bring me your good harvested food anyway when you come to Ceetar's brewery by the seaside.
